  • Chimpanzees in west Africa observed indulging in habitual drinking

The boozing starts from 7am. Though large amounts are often drunk, the sessions are orderly, even sociable. A skinful later, and always before nightfall, enough is enough and they rest.

They are the chimpanzees of Bossou, south-eastern Guinea, and their secret is finally out. With 17 years of evidence in hand, scientists have declared the troop the first wild chimpanzees to indulge in regular, habitual drinking.

Monkey’n With The Law

  • House votes to derail President Obama’s trade package

The House has delivered a stinging blow to President Barack Obama that leaves his ambitious trade agenda in doubt.

A bipartisan majority rejected a jobs retraining program Friday that was part of a Senate-approved trade package pursued by Obama.

The vote was 302-126. The measure failed despite Obama’s last-minute Capitol visit to personally ask Democrats to support him.

GOP leaders earlier said the entire trade package would fail if the retraining program died. They scrambled Friday for possible alternatives.

Obama wants “fast track” authority to negotiate trade agreements. Most Republicans support that but oppose the retraining program.

  • House passes Obama’s ‘fast-track’ authority to negotiate trade deal

President Barack Obama has succeeded in obtaining controversial “fast-track” approval for his Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal in the House of Representatives.

The Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), as the “fast-track” powers are officially called, passed by a vote of 219-211, giving President Obama an unlikely victory. In a preceding vote, the House struck down a proposal to extend the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program, providing assistance to workers who would lose jobs as a consequence of trade deals.

With both the Senate and the House adopting “fast-track” authorization, Congress will only be able to vote on the finalized agreement, without the opportunity to offer amendments.

  • Senator warns of another attempt to pass Obamatrade The House held a symbolic vote Friday in which fast-track authority was approved, 219-211. But according to rules approved by the Senate, the legislation cannot advance unless the House approves both TAA and TPA. Trade Adjustment assistance provides job training and financial aid to workers who lose their jobs as a result of foreign-trade agreements like TPP.

Marijuana Monopoly

  • Medical marijuana legal in all forms, Supreme Court rules

Medical marijuana patients will now be able to consume marijuana — and not just smoke it — as well as use other extracts and derivatives, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled today.

The unanimous ruling against the federal government expands the definition of medical marijuana beyond the “dried” form.

The country’s highest court found the current restriction to dried marijuana violates the right to liberty and security “in a manner that is arbitrary and hence is not in accord with the principles of fundamental justice.”

Restricting medical access to marijuana to a dried form has now been declared “null and void” — Sections 4 and 5 of the Controlled Drug and Substances Act, which prohibits possession and trafficking of non-dried forms of cannabis, will no longer be in effect.

  • TSA Fails to ID 73 Airport Employees With Links to Terrorism

A new Department of Homeland Security Inspector General report found that the Transportation Security Administration failed to identify 73 aviation employees with active clearance badges with links to terrorism.

The people, who were employed by major airlines, airport vendors and other employers, were not identified because TSA is not authorized to receive all terrorism-related information under current inter-agency policies, the report said.

  • Vatican makes history: Pope allows Islamic prayers, Koran readings

For the first time in Vatican history, the pope allowed for the reading of Islamic prayers and Koran readings from the Catholic facility.

The readings and prayer came as Pope Francis met with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Vatican City, a gathering designed to pray for Middle Eastern peace.

A Holy See spokesman said the prayers were supposed to be a “pause in politics,” Breitbart reported. The pope said, too, that he hoped the interfaith prayers would foster peace specifically between Israelis and Palestinians, the news outlet said.

  • SOTT Exclusive: Putin presented peace medal by the pope, more popular than ever

The polarization of opinions on Russian President Vladimir Putin couldn’t be more extreme. To the ‘official’ West, he is an authoritarian dictator, the next Hitler, a greedy power-mad ex-intelligence menace to all the values the Western world holds dear. To everyone else, he’s nothing of the sort. After all, what are Western ‘values’, really? As I wrote in my last article for SOTT (Where’s my cookie?! Anti-government protests in Ukraine ignored by US and EU), they’re pretty obvious: “crippling, suicidal debt, no economic or foreign policy to speak of, the torture and murder of civilians, brazen lies, insane rhetoric, and brutal psychopathy.” Freedom and democracy are meaningless words, or at least, their true meanings are totally opposite to what most people think.

By his words and his actions, Putin has shown that he not only sees through the democratic doublespeak; he’s also doing things in such a way as to avoid the worst aspects of Western freedom and democracy. You know, by supporting things like diplomacy over aggression, international law over unilateral invasions and blatant interference in the affairs of other nations, dialogue and cooperation over threats, demands, and subjugation. This is unacceptable to the rulers of the West, who amount to little more than an entrenched, hereditary, oligarchic ruling class that has thought it has the right to rule the world by virtue of the size of its military and the size of its checkbook.  Putin met the Pope while in Italy. Here’s one description of what went down:

“Discussed the current situation in world affairs, of course, mentioned the crisis in Ukraine, spoke about the universal and humanitarian values, which largely unite the Catholic and Orthodox worlds, and all religions,” — said Peskov, also noting that both sides expressed concern about the situation with Christians in the Middle East.

“First of all, of course, those situations that pose a threat to the life of Christians in Syria, and continued conflict. Indeed, this is a very dire situation”, — quoted RIA Novosti the words of a Kremlin representative.

In total, the meeting lasted more than an hour. According to Peskov, “the conversation got really deep and thorough“.

After the meeting, Pope Francis gave Putin a medal with the image of an angel-peacemaker. Presenting a gift to the Russian President, the pontiff said: “This medal, which was created by the artist of the last century, depicts an angel who brings peace and justice, and solidarity, and protects. As well as this text, in which there is a reflection on the fact that the gospel brings us light and joy, and there are geopolitical thoughts about us and about our life”, — TASS quoted the words of the Pope.

In turn, Vladimir Putin presented Pope Francis with a canvas of the temple of Christ the Savior, as well as several volumes of the Orthodox Encyclopedia.

Counter Measures

  • Russia adopts law banning NGOs threatening national security

Russia has adopted a new law that enables prosecutors to shut down those foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are deemed threatening to the country’s constitutional order or security.

According to the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed the bill into law barring such NGOs.

It said in a statement that based on the new legislation, authorities are allowed to ban foreign NGOs considered as threatening Russia’s “defense capabilities” or “constitutional foundations.”

The law, which had been passed by the parliament earlier this month, also permits officials to block the bank accounts of the organizations until the NGOs “account for their actions” to the Russian authorities.

Lawmakers said the legislation is needed to stop “destructive organizations” working in Russia, which could endanger the “value of the Russian state.”

Back in 2012, a law was passed under which the NGOs that receive foreign funds must register as a “foreign agent.” The new legislation complements that law.

  • Retired NASA Scientists Take on Pope  With the papal encyclical on climate change scheduled for a June 18 release, the liberal media can be expected to portray the Vatican document as a major step forward for the United Nations agenda of controlling and taxing the use of natural resources by governments and people. But a group of retired NASA scientists is taking on the pope directly, armed with the expertise that has come through decades of planning U.S. space missions and dealing with the most complex and difficult issues of climate science.
Their verdict: the pope is risking his moral status and his credibility.
In fact, this group is directly warning Pope Francis that if he embraces the climate agenda of the United Nations, he will be violating both scientific principles and the religious values he embodies that are supposed to be reflected in direct aid for the poor people of the earth.
But the pope is apparently counting on his status as “the most popular person on the Earth,” in the words of Dan Misleh, executive director of the Catholic Climate Covenant organization, to make the “moral” case that we live on “an abundant yet finite planet,” and that global limits to industrial growth have to be imposed on a worldwide basis.
The battle, now taking shape, will likely help determine whether U.S. sovereignty will be sacrificed in order to make possible a system of “global governance” or world government.

  • NASA TO GLOBAL WARMING CULT: POLAR ICE CAPS HAVE NOT RECEDED AT ALL

Updated data from NASA satellite instruments reveal the Earth’s polar ice caps have not receded at all since the satellite instruments began measuring the ice caps in 1979.
Since the end of 2012, moreover, total polar ice extent has largely remained above the post-1979 average. The updated data contradict one of the most frequently asserted global warming claims – that global warming is causing the polar ice caps to recede.
The timing of the 1979 NASA satellite instrument launch could not have been better for global warming alarmists. The late 1970s marked the end of a 30-year cooling trend. As a result, the polar ice caps were quite likely more extensive than they had been since at least the 1920s. Nevertheless, this abnormally extensive 1979 polar ice extent would appear to be the “normal” baseline when comparing post-1979 polar ice extent.

  • The Sea Level Scam

Climate alarmists put forth scary scenarios saying that carbon dioxide induced global warming is causing unprecedented and accelerating sea level rise which will drown our coastal cities and wipe out South Pacific Islands.

Measuring sea level is more complicated than pounding a stake into a beach. Sea level and the rate of rise or fall are subject to daily and seasonal variations, storm surges, and effects from decadal to multi-decadal oscillations such as El Niño. For instance, the west-blowing equatorial trade winds can pile up an extra foot of water in the western Pacific compared to the eastern Pacific. There are also tectonic events: is the ocean rising or is the land sinking? Pumping groundwater causes soil compaction and hence sinking land. Another complication: isostatic rebound of North America is tipping the northeast coast into the sea. (For a more detailed explanation of glacial isostacy see here.)

Let’s start with the big picture.

Vatican Death Cult

  • Vatican Speaker on Climate Thinks There are 6 Billion Too Many of Us

One of the speakers slated for the Vatican rollout of the long-awaited Papal document on climate change once said the earth is overpopulated by at least 6 billion people.

The teaching document, called an encyclical, is scheduled for release on June 18 at Vatican City. Perhaps with the exception of the 1968 encyclical on contraception, no Vatican document has been greeted with such anticipation.

The political left is hoping for a document that ties belief in global warming to a religious obligation. Climate skeptics have already started criticizing the document.

The choice of Professor John Schnellnhuber, founding director of the Postdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, as one of three presenters may be giving the left added hope and giving giving skeptics severe heartburn. He has been described as one of the more aggressive scientists on the question of man-made global warming.

In a talk given to what’s described as the “failed” 2009 Copenhagen climate conference, reported in the New York Times, Schnellnhuber, who has advised German President Angela Merkel and is a visiting professor at Oxford, said of global warming: “In a very cynical way, it’s a triumph for science because at last we have stabilized something –- namely the estimates for the carrying capacity of the planet, namely below 1 billion people.”

Data Transparency: You Won’t See It

  • CIA Ends Information Sharing with Climate Scientists

Shutting down a program that began nearly a quarter-century ago, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has decided to stop sharing classified information it collects on the ocean and atmosphere with scientists studying climate change.

The CIA has ended its Measurements of Earth Data for Environmental Analysis (MEDEA) program, according to news reported by Mother Jones. Under MEDEA, about 60 civilian scientists had security clearances that allowed them to receive classified data, “such as ocean temperature and tidal readings gathered by Navy submarines and topography data collected by spy satellites,” wrote journalist Tim McDonnell.

The program provided climate experts with information about global warming and other climate-related threats that they couldn’t access from other sources.

The CIA didn’t state why it shuttered MEDEA, saying in a statement: “Under the Medea program to examine the implications of climate change, CIA participated in various projects. These projects have been completed and CIA will employ these research results and engage external experts as it continues to evaluate the national security implications of climate change.”

  • Family Raided by SWAT and their Dog Shot, for Being Unable to Pay Utility Bill

Nothing says Police State USA quite like a SWAT team raiding a family home and killing their dog because they are unable to pay their natural gas bill.

The woman whose dog was killed and home destroyed by SWAT officers is Angela Zorich, and her story about her police state experience will shock the conscious.

According to a federal lawsuit filed this month, Zorich was the victim of a massive military-style raid and subsequent puppycide. The raid was carried out because police said they needed “to check if her home had electricity and natural gas service.”

  • Court Rules Disabled Patient Can be Starved to Death Against His Will

A European court has issued a ruling that a disabled patient can be starved to death against his will.

Vincent Lambert, a tetraplegic patient who has been in a state of minimal consciousness in hospital for six years following a car accident, is current receiving food and water via a feeding tube. The decision to cut his intravenous food and water supply has divided his family. Lambert’s doctors and wife wanted to starve him to death while his parents, who are vehemently opposed to ending his life, took his case to court.

In January 2014 a court in France ruled against starving Lambert to death. But, today, the European Court of Human Rights today issued its decision and, by a vote of 12-5, the Grand Chamber held that a State may take Lambert’s life against his will.

Grégor Puppinck of the ELCJ, a pro-life legal group, tells LifeNews.com that the European Court of Human Rights also refused Vincent Lambert’s parents the right to complain on behalf of their son regarding the inhumane treatment he has been subjected to for three years now, due to stopping his physiotherapy care.

Thus, the Court not only held that in Europe, we can again legally induce the death of a disabled patient who did not ask to die, but in addition, it denies that patient the protection of the Convention against mistreatment. By refusing to guarantee the right to life and to medical care for Vincent Lambert, the Court is turning a page in the history of human rights in Europe,” Puppinck said. “The Court reintroduced into the European legality the possibility to euthanize a disabled person, even though it is precisely against this ideology that the European Convention on Human Rights was proclaimed in 1950.”
