  • Crane disaster killing 107

A Saudi official has confirmed that the annual hajj to Mecca will go ahead, despite the horrific crane disaster that killed 107 people and wounded 238 in the city yesterday.

The tragedy occurred when a crane crashed through the ceiling of the Grand Mosque of Mecca, the largest mosque in the world, amid high winds and thunderstorms on Friday afternoon.  Pictures taken before the disaster show the crane being struck by a bolt of lightning and authorities are in little doubt extreme weather was to blame.

The crane belongs to a German crane company operated by the Bin Laden family’s consortium, who are heading the expansion of the Holy Mosque.

Saudi BinLaden Group was founded by Osama’s Bin Laden’s billionaire father Mohammed and the sprawling construction conglomerate runs a large amount of major building contracts in the Sunni kingdom.

  • Brazil reduced to junk as BRICs facade crumbles

Brazil’s currency has plummeted to an all-time low and borrowing costs have tightened viciously after Standard & Poor’s slashed the country’s debt to junk status, warning that the budget deficit has reached danger levels.

The downgrade is a painful blow to a nation that thought it had finally escaped the Latin American curse of boom-bust cycles and joined the top league of rich economies.

It is the second of the big emerging market (EM) economies to be stripped of its investment grade rating this year after Russia crashed out of the club in January. Little remains of the BRICS allure that captivated the world seven years ago, and now looks like a marketing gimmick.

  • The Pope vs. America

Pope Francis has been brushing up on his English ahead of his arrival in Washington in September, and tickets to his U.S. events are already a hot commodity. But anyone expecting his message to be simply one of mercy and love could be in for a distinct surprise.

For more than a century, popes have made nuanced criticisms of the free-market capitalism that drives the American dream. But Pope Francis, with an unprecedented vigor, is locking horns with much that Washington and Wall Street hold dear. Why does he take such a hard line?

In the two-plus years since his election, he has enchanted and bewildered the world in equal measure with his compassion and his contradictions. But he has also proved himself a wily and sophisticated politician. Understanding this side of Francis—capable of crafty maneuvering, unafraid of confrontation, ready to seek out unlikely allies—is essential for understanding the complicated effect he is having on American politics.  But there is another key to understanding the pope’s worldview. His predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, was above all a theologian. Pope John Paul II, before that, was originally an actor and a philosopher. But Francis trained as a scientist. One of his adages is: “Facts are more important than ideas.” The intersection of these two threads in Francis’ life—his sympathy for the poor and his insistence that reality comes before theory—help account for how the United States and its unrestrained capitalism have come into the papal crosshairs.

  • The Question Stephen Colbert Wants To Ask Pope FrancisIf you can’t get enough of Pope Francis, then how about a little Stephen Colbert?

Colbert has reportedly been moving heaven and earth to try to snag a few minutes with the pontiff, who visits Washington, New York and Philadelphia from Sept. 22-27. That’d be a season-making score, to be sure; yet it may be beyond even Colbert’s impressive influence.

But like Francis, Colbert is no slouch when it comes to evangelization.

He taught Sunday school at his New Jersey parish and he frequently deployed Catholicism for semi-serious fodder for his previous incarnation as a right-wing blowhard on “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central. (And had a Jesuit priest, the Rev. James Martin, as his official chaplain and regular guest.)

The Wicked in High Places

  • Ephesians 6

    The Full Armor of God

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

BAR ASS. Plunder

  • The Model Business Corporation Act Planetary Governance

RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association adopts and endorses the following
    corporate governance practices:
    1. The board of directors of a public corporation must engage in active, independent and informed oversight of the corporation’s business and affairs, including its senior management. 8. The Model Business Corporation Act and the general corporation laws of the states, and the courts interpreting and applying the duties of directors, should more clearly delineate the oversight responsibility of directors generally, and the unique role that independent directors play in discharging that responsibility in public company settings.
  • AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION ADOPTED BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES

    August 11 – 12, 2003
RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association recognizes that good governance and the rule
of law are essential to achieving sustainable development.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association reaffirms its 1991 commitment to
sustainable development, and adopts the internationally accepted concept of sustainable
development, as recognized at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 and subsequent international conferences: simultaneous achievement of environmental protection, economic development, social development, and peace, for present and future generations.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association encourages governments, including U.S. federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial bodies, as well as businesses,
nongovernmental organizations, and other entities, to promote sustainable development,
including by adopting and implementing appropriate measures with respect to their own facilities and activities.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association urges the U.S. government to meet the targets and timetables for sustainable development that are contained in the Plan of
Implementation adopted at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg,

South Africa, in September 2002, that are applicable to the United States and to which the United States agreed.

REPORT: At the 1992 U.N. Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro
(UNCED, or Earth Summit), the United States and other countries adopted a global plan of
action for sustainable development (Agenda 21) and a set of 27 principles to guide that effort
(Rio Declaration). Sustainable development is “socially responsible economic development”
that protects “the resource base and the environment for the benefit of future generations
    .” UNCED, Agenda 21, ¶ 8.7.

  • AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION ADOPTED BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES

    AUGUST 12-13, 2013
RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association reaffirms its 1991 and 2003 commitments to
sustainable development, and defines sustainable development as “the promotion of an
economically, socially and environmentally sustainable future for our planet and for present and future generations.”
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association urges all governments, lawyers,
and ABA entities to act in ways that accelerate progress toward sustainability.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association encourages law schools, legal
education providers, and others concerned with professional development to foster sustainability in their facilities and operations and to help promote a better understanding

of the principles of sustainable development in relevant fields of law.

    Introduction — Sustainability in Context
Sustainable development has its origins in the conservation and environmental movements in the United States and other countries, in the laws that were adopted because of those movements, and in the lawyers that drafted and worked with clients to implement these laws. Long before the U.N. Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro (UNCED, or Earth Summit), for example, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 declared a national policy “to create and maintain conditions under which man and nature can exist in productive harmony, and fulfill the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations of Americans” (42 U.S.C. § 4331(a)).

What Mr. Rothschild [2] had discovered was the basic principle of power, influence, and control over people as applied to economics. That principle is “when you assume the appearance of power, people soon give it to you.”
