Civil Calendar Controls

  • Julian calendar
The Julian calendar has been replaced as the civil calendar by the Gregorian calendar in all countries which formerly used it, although it continued to be the civil calendar of some countries into the 20th century. Among the last countries to convert to the Gregorian calendar were Russia (in 1918) and Greece (in 1923).[3] As of 1930, all countries that were using the Julian calendar had discontinued it. Most Christian denominations in the West and areas evangelized by Western churches have also replaced the Julian calendar with the Gregorian as the basis for their liturgical calendars. However, most branches of the Eastern Orthodox Church still use the Julian calendar for calculating the dates of moveable feasts, including Easter (Pascha). Some Orthodox churches have adopted the Revised Julian calendar for the observance of fixed feasts, while other Orthodox churches retain the Julian calendar for all purposes.[4] The Julian calendar is still used by the Berber people of North Africa,[5] and on Mount Athos. In the form of the Alexandrian calendar, it is the basis for the Ethiopian calendar, which is the civil calendar of Ethiopia.
  • Civil calendar

In any country, the civil calendar is the calendar, or possibly one of several calendars, used within that country for civil, official or administrative purposes. The civil calendar is almost always used for general purposes by people and private organizations.

The most widespread civil calendar and de facto international standard is the Gregorian calendar. Though that calendar is associated with the Catholic Church and the papacy, it has been adopted, as a matter of convenience, by many secular and non-Christian countries although some countries use other calendars.

Commonly, another calendar, or more than one, is used alongside the civil calendar. For example, Christian Churches have their own calendars, which they use to compute the dates for their own festivals, though most of these dates are then expressed relative to the civil calendar. In Christian terminology these festivals are called movable feasts. Very few Christian festivals are fixed in relation to the civil calendar, the most notable one being Christmas.

  • Civil Calendar – Legal Definition

    n. the list of lawsuits (cases) that are approaching trial in any court. Attorneys and/or parties whose cases are coming to the top of the list receive notice of the “calling” of the civil calendar on a particular day for setting a trial date. Unfortunately, some courts are so clogged with pending lawsuits that one case may be called on several civil calendars, possibly months apart, before being finally sent to trial. (See: calendar)

  • Types of Calendars

Types of Calendar is a system that defines date, month and year. Calendars not only helps its user to identify the day but also keeps him abreast of upcoming events and appointments. Types of Calendars also helps him to efficiently manage his time.

Some calendars follow the movement of Sun while others follow the cycle of moon.

  • Moon Calendars

Moon calendars are known as the types of calendars that are adjusted according to the moon phases. They are commonly recognized as lunar calendars and have been used through the years for religious, cultural and various other purposes. Moon calendars reveal months that correspond on the lunation, which is based on the moon phase for each day. A lunar year is a period consisting of 12 lunations, which is an episode of 354.37 days. There are various calendars that are based on the moon phases such as Islamic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindu and a few others.

  • Lunar Calendar

Lunar calendars are used by people of various cultures and chiefly the days of the calendar are determined by the moon phase. The normal procedure used to determine a lunar month is to consider a month as a lunation in which the days of the month are indicated as a part of phase of moon. The lunisolar calendars also tracks the seasons. In our normal calendars we have 365 days and 366 in the case of a leap year. The lunar calendars on the other hand consist of 354.37 days, also referred to as the lunar year, the twelve months being denoted as synodic months.

Embrace The Hooters

  • Hooters Calendar

Since 1986, the Hooters Calendar is hitting the populace as the best-selling calendar of this kind. The calendar is covered with photos of world famous hooter girls around the world. In addition to those pictures, the calendar displays different jokes and funny graphic items.

    The Remarkable Difference:

There are several remarkable differences out there if we compare Hooters Calendar to the common one. Firstly, the Hooters Calendar can not serve as a common calendar. Most of the days in the Hooters Calendar are filled with the photos of the Hooters girls and jokes. Secondly, the months are not in order as well.

The ordering of months in this calendar is really unique and out of the crowd. Here, as a viewer wants to find out the desired month, he or she needs to start searching from the very beginning of the calendar. The idea behind this type of ordering, according to the project director Doug Vollmer, is nothing but to make the viewer to see all the girls and jokes once again for each of the time.

That means, a viewer has to view the same pictures and write-ups again and again for each of the months. It sounds quite monotonous, but in practice, the case is found quite worthy considering the popularity since last two decades.

  • Cost of doctor’s mistakes: Father jailed after armed standoff to save his son
27-year-old American suffered a massive stroke. Doctors declared him brain dead and approved taking him off life support. His desperate father took a gun and threatened staff to save his son’s life.
Shortly after that night, the patient came out of the coma and made a full recovery. However his father was sentenced to 10 months for the incident.

Firearm For Effect – Issues That Ain’t

  • Minn. Man Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Illegal Possession of BB Gun

The Minnesota Supreme Court is set to take on a case that will determine whether a BB gun is considered a firearm as it pertains to felons who have had their gun rights stripped due to a prior conviction.

37-year-old Minnesota resident David Lee Haywood was sentenced to five years in prison for possession of firearm by an ineligible felon during a 2013 incident in which officers found a Walther CP99 Compact .177 caliber BB gun in the glove box of his vehicle while arresting him for violating the terms of a no contact order.

Haywood’s gun rights had been stripped in 2005 following his conviction on felony drug charges. He is being represented in the case by public defender Thomas Handley Jr.

  • Firearms Law & Legal Definition

Under 26 USCA § 861 (a), firearms is defined as “”a shot gun or rifle having a barrel of less than eighteen inches in length, or any other weapon, except a pistol or revolver, from which a shot is discharged by an explosive if such weapon is capable of being concealed on the person, or a machine gun, and includes a muffler or silencer for any firearm whether or not such firearm is included within the foregoing definition.” United States v. Adams, 11 F. Supp. 216, 217 (S.D. Fla. 1935)

Law involving firearms governs the registration of any weapon which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive; the frame or receiver of any such weapon; any firearm muffler or firearm silencer; or any destructive device. Title 26, U.S.C., Sec. 5861(d), makes it a Federal crime or offense for anyone to possess certain kinds of firearms which are not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. Laws govern who may own firearms, such as prohibiting felons to carry guns, childrens’ access to firearms, recordkeeping, transport, and licensing of those dealing in firearms. Federal law makes it unlawful for any person except a licensed dealer to engage in the business of dealing in firearms. Some states have also adopted dealer regulations.

  • VA GOP to Undo AG’s Anti-Gun Policy with National Reciprocity Legislation

In the wake of Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring’s (D) decision to end concealed carry reciprocity with 25 states, Republican lawmakers are pushing legislation that will honor concealed permits from every state–thereby overriding Herring’s action.

Martial Law In Deed

  • Entire Florida Police Dept Busted Laundering Tens of Millions for International Drug Cartels

The village of Bal Harbour, population 2,513, may have a tiny footprint on the northern tip of Miami Beach, but its police department had grand aspirations of going after international drug traffickers, and making a few million dollars while they were at it.

The Bal Harbour PD and the Glades County Sheriff’s Office set up a giant money laundering scheme with the purported goal of busting drug cartels and stemming the surge of drug dealing going on in the area. But it all fell apart when federal investigators and the Miami-Herald found strange things going on.

The two-year operation, which took in more than $55 million from criminal groups, resulted in zero arrests but netted $2.4 million for the police posing as money launderers. Members of the 12-person task force traveled far and wide to carry out their deals, from Los Angeles to New York to Puerto Rico.

  • Horrifying Video Shows Cops Sic K-9 on Infant Daughter of a Man they Mistook for a Suspect

On January 30, 2015, a health food store in Henderson called the police after a disgruntled customer, attempting to return some protein powder, allegedly threatened to rob them. The store described the suspect to police as a black male wearing a black and tan t-shirt who left in an SUV.

As police responded to the call, they quickly stopped the first person they saw, who happened to be Arturo Arenas-Alvarez. Arenas-Alvarez had just pulled up in the shopping center to do some shopping when police drew their weapons and demanded he put his hands in the air and step toward them.

Arenas-Alvarez did not appear to understand why multiple armed men were pointing their guns at him, so one officer asked him in Spanish to approach the vehicle.

Before Arenas-Alvarez makes it all the way to the vehicle, officers realized they had the wrong guy.

“That’s not him, dude. That’s not a black man in a black shirt,” one officer said to another.

“My baby,” Arturo Arenas-Alvarez can be heard pleading with officers in broken English. “I’ve got my baby.”

An officer then yelled out, “There’s an infant in that car! There’s an infant in that car!”

But it was too late. By the time the cops realized that their immediate escalation to violence was unnecessary – the damage had been done.

Ayleen’s blood curdling and heart-wrenching screams of agony can be heard on the dashcam. The 4-year-old dog, Doerak, was ripping into the baby’s flesh. By the time the dog let go of the infant, her right arm had been mauled. She was left with nine puncture wounds and abrasions.

After the incident was over, Mitchell can be heard blaming his fellow officers for releasing the dog.

“God damn, guys, you gotta f**king tell me!” he yelled. But Mitchell didn’t give the other officers any time to tell him before letting loose the dog.

Chemical Behavior Control

  • Team reprograms social behavior in carpenter ants using epigenetic drugs

In Florida carpenter ant colonies, distinct worker castes called minors and majors exhibit pronounced differences in social behavior throughout their lives. In a new study published today in Science, a multi-institution team anchored at University of Pennsylvania found that these caste-specific behaviors are not set in stone. Rather, this pioneering study shows that social behavior can be reprogrammed, indicating that an individual’s epigenetic, not genetic, makeup determines behavior in ant colonies.

Epigenetics is the study of stable, or persistent, changes in gene expression that occur without changes in DNA sequence. Epigenetic regulation has been observed to affect a variety of distinct traits in animals, including body size, aging, and behavior. However, there is an enormous gap in knowledge about the that regulate .

Knowing that histone modifications are used to establish specific features of different tissues within an individual led the team to ask whether histone modifications might also be used to create differences in traits like social behavior between individuals, notably the brawny majors and the brainy minors.

In the Science paper, the team fed foraging minors a chemical inhibitor that prevents cells from removing acetyl groups from histones. This treatment enhanced foraging and scouting for food, and correspondingly, led to increased histone acetylation near genes involved in neuronal activity. Conversely, inhibiting the addition of acetyl groups led to decreased foraging activity.

In contrast to the dramatic boost in foraging seen in minors, feeding mature major workers these inhibitors caused little to no increase in foraging. However, the team found that directly injecting these epigenetic inhibitors into the brains of very young majors immediately increased foraging, reaching levels normally only observed in minors. Additionally, a single treatment with these inhibitors was sufficient to induce and sustain minor-like foraging in the majors for up to 50 days. These results suggest that there is an “epigenetic window of vulnerability” in young ant brains, which confers increased susceptibility to environmental manipulations, such as with histone-modifying inhibitors.

Berger observes that all of the genes known to be major epigenetic regulators in mammals are also present in ants, which makes ants “a fantastic model for studying principles of epigenetic modulation of behavior and even longevity, because queens have a much longer lifespan compared to the major and minor workers. Because of the remarkable window we have uncovered, ants also provide an extraordinary opportunity to explore and understand the epigenetic processes that come into play to establish behavioral patterns at a young age. This is a topic of increasing research interest in humans, owing to the growing prevalence of behavioral disorders and diseases and the appreciation that diet may influence behavior.”

    Broader Implications

One important gene implicated in the ant study is CBP, which is an epigenetic “writer” enzyme that alters chromatin by adding acetyl groups to histones. CBP had already been implicated as a critical enzyme facilitating learning and memory in mice and is mutated in certain human cognitive disorders, notably Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome. Hence, the team’s findings suggest that CBP-mediated histone acetylation may also facilitate complex social interactions found in vertebrate species.

The authors suspect that CBP’s role as an epigenetic writer enzyme contributes to patterns of histone acetylation that enhance memory pathways related to learned behaviors such as foraging. Differences in CBP activity between minor and major castes may guide unique patterns of gene expression that fine tune neuronal functions for each caste.

“From mammalian studies, it’s clear this is an important protein involved in learning and memory,” Berger noted. “The finding that CBP plays a key role in establishing distinct social behaviors in ants strongly suggests that the discoveries made in may have broad implications for understanding social organization.”

The Berger team is now focused on precisely defining the “epigenetic window of vulnerability” and its key molecular features. She explains that “understanding the mechanisms of when and how this window is opened and how changes are sustained—and why the window closes as the major ant ages—may have profound implications for explaining human vulnerability to early life exposures.”

  • Structural Biochemistry/Enzyme/Acetyltransferase
An acetyltransferase is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of acetyl groups.

    p300/CBP

p300 and CREB binding protein (CBP) are both acetyltransferases that are highly conserved. Both have specific domains within the enzyme: three cysteine-histidine rich domains, bromodomain, and acetyltransferase domain. CBP/p300 phosphorylation activates acetyltransferase activity, which increases histone acetylation at target promoters and facilitates CBP/p300-dependent transactivation of genes. The acetyltransferase domains in these enzymes also uncovered autoacetylation activity. Autoacetylation of these enzymes causes a conformational change of the histone as well as the enzyme itself that directly affects the enzyme’s ability to interact with Mediator, which is a multi-protein complex that plays an important role in the beginning stages of transcriptional activation.

    TIP60

TIP60 is party of the MYST family of acetyltransferases conserved from yeast to humans. It acetylates core histones H2A, H3, and H4. This enzyme plays a crucial role in DNA damage response and apoptosis. TIP60 acetylizes the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) kinase, which is the central kinase in the repair pathways started by DNA lesions. Studies also show that ATF2 interacts with TIP60 and modulates its function at the DNA damage response step. Before DNA damage, ATF2 has low TIP60 levels by facilitationg TIP60 degradation. After DNA damage, TIP60 and ATF2 are more loosely associated. In addition, the sumoylation of TIP60 plays a key role in the localization and catalytic activity of the enzyme, influencing the enzyme’s ability to help with DNA damage. Through experiments and observations, researchers have concluded that there is an important link between TIP60 levels and the signals generated by DNA damage response pathways. Evidence shows that human prostate cancer samples display loss of TIP60 and human lymphomas and mammary tumors display loss of TIP60.

  • CREB
CREB (cAMP response element-binding protein)[1] is a cellular transcription factor. It binds to certain DNA sequences called cAMP response elements (CRE), thereby increasing or decreasing the transcription of the downstream genes.[2] CREB was first described in 1987 as a cAMP-responsive transcription factor regulating the somatostatin gene.[3]Genes whose transcription is regulated by CREB include: c-fos, BDNF, tyrosine hydroxylase, numerous neuropeptides (such as somatostatin, enkephalin, VGF, corticotropin-releasing hormone),[2] and genes involved in the mammalian circadian clock (PER1, PER2).[4]CREB is closely related in structure and function to CREM (cAMP response element modulator) and ATF-1 (activating transcription factor-1) proteins. CREB proteins are expressed in many animals, including humans.
  • Transcriptional activation: Is it rocket science?
One of the beautiful things about biology is that you don’t have to fully understand it to put it to good use. The engineers who design spacecraft may need a certain working familiarity with all of the parts in their systems. But biologists, and particularly biologists whose mission is to treat human disease, can make do with considerably more ignorance. One reason for this difference is that biological control usually is exerted through linear pathways of protein–protein interactions. Intervention at a single known point in the pathway often is sufficient to capture that pathway in its entirety.
A very elegant and potentially far-reaching example of this phenomenon appears in the current issue of the Proceedings (1). The biological pathway in question is the initiation of gene transcription. Transcriptional initiation in eukaryotes requires the assembly of scores of proteins into a superstructure at the gene promoter. The precise identities of these proteins and their order of assembly, while beginning to come into focus, are still quite mysterious.
