Cashless Societies

  • War On Cash Intensifies: Citibank To Stop Accepting Cash At Some Branches

Less than a week after India’s surprise move to scrap its highest denomination cash notes, another front in the War on Cash has intensified down under in Australia.
Yesterday, banking giant UBS proposed that eliminating Australia’s $100 and $50 bills would be “good for the economy and good for the banks.”
(How convenient that a bank would propose something that’s good for banks!)
This isn’t the first time that the financial establishment has pushed for a cashless society in Australia (or anywhere else).
In September 2015, Australian bank Westpac published its “Cash Free Report”, suggesting that the country would become cashless by 2022.
In July 2016, Australian payments firm Tyro published an enormously self-serving blog post touting the benefits of a cashless society and saying, “it’s only a matter of time.”
Most notably, two days ago, Citibank (yes, THAT Citibank) announced that it was going cashless at some of its Australian branches.
The media and political establishments have chimed in as well.

  • Which Country Do You Speak?

Under such an extended Benefit of BAR Ass., Terror, intimidation, and dread there is no Constitutional rights, no Inalienable rights, no Rights of Man, nothing but the insult of being defined and treated an animal, a property in commerce. A Beast of Burden.

(See: Ballantine’s Law Dictionary, 1930, — Human being:
See monster. — Monster. A human-being by birth, but in some part resembling a lower animal. “A monster, hath no inheritable blood, and cannot be heir to any land.”)

7 USC 136 (d) Animal. The term “animal” means, all vertebrate and invertebrate species, including but not limited to man and other mammals, birds, fish, and shellfish.

    Private corporate BARcode governance,
[See its statutory copyright on relevant Code title page],
extends no more rights to man than that of an animal or pest:

7 USC 136 (t) Pest. The term “pest” means (1) any insect, rodent, nematode, fungus, weed, or (2) any other form of terrestrial or aquatic plant or animal life or virus, bacteria, or other micro-organism (except viruses, bacteria, or other micro-organisms on or in living man or other living animals) which the Administrator declares to be a pest under section 25(c)(1) [7 USCS 136w(c)(1)]. Specially note the pest exceptions to the parasites on or in man, mans equivalence to “virus, bacteria, or other micro-organism”, and the absence of the term “person” on what the BARcode constitutes a pest to conclude man is not a person.

Man is defined a pest animal.

  • Mobile phone numbers without fingerprint records to disconnect from today

The Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) announced on Wednesday that mobile phone numbers without fingerprint registration would be disconnected as of Thursday.

All types of subscribers, including post-paid, pre-paid and data SIM, who did not register their fingerprints will be affected by the move, the Saudi Press Agency reported quoting a commission statement.

The commission said the subscriber could restore the service by authenticating the numbers with fingerprint registration within 90 days of disconnection. The CITC had earlier set the deadline for fingerprint registration of mobile phone consumers of all service providers in the Kingdom on July 20 (Shawwal 15). It thanked all subscribers who validated their SIM cards through fingerprinting.

  • Secure Boot snafu: Microsoft leaks backdoor key, firmware flung wide open

Update: The company said: “The jailbreak technique described in the researchers’ report on August 10 does not apply to desktop or enterprise PC systems. It requires physical access and administrator rights to ARM and RT devices and does not compromise encryption protections.”

    Original Story

Microsoft has inadvertently demonstrated the intrinsic security problem of including a universal backdoor in its software after it accidentally leaked its so-called “golden key”—which allows users to unlock any device that’s supposedly protected by Secure Boot, such as phones and tablets.

The key basically allows anyone to bypass the provisions Microsoft has put in place ostensibly to prevent malicious versions of Windows from being installed, on any device running Windows 8.1 and upwards with Secure Boot enabled.

And while this means that enterprising users will be able to install any operating system—Linux, for instance—on their Windows tablet, it also allows bad actors with physical access to a machine to install bootkits and rootkits at deep levels. Worse, according to the security researchers who found the keys, this is a decision Microsoft may be unable to reverse.

The golden keys were found by MY123 and Slipstream in March this year. They’ve just posted, on a rather funky website, a description both of Microsoft’s security errors and of its seeming reluctance to patch the issue. The researchers note that this snafu is a real-world demonstration of the lack of wisdom in the FBI’s recent demands for universal backdoors in Apple’s devices. They wrote:

A backdoor, which MS put in to Secure Boot because they decided to not let the user turn it off in certain devices, allows for Secure Boot to be disabled everywhere! You can see the irony. Also the irony in that MS themselves provided us several nice “golden keys” (as the FBI would say) 😉 for us to use for that purpose 🙂

About the FBI: are you reading this? If you are, then this is a perfect real world example about why your idea of backdooring cryptosystems with a “secure golden key” is very bad! Smarter people than me have been telling this to you for so long, it seems you have your fingers in your ears.

You seriously don’t understand still? Microsoft implemented a “secure golden key” system. And the golden keys got released from MS[‘s] own stupidity. Now, what happens if you tell everyone to make a “secure golden key” system? Hopefully you can add 2+2…

The researchers seem to have found the golden key—which isn’t a PKI-type private key you would use to sign binaries, but rather a way to alter the tasks executed by UEFI at boot—bundled in dormant form on retail devices, left in as a debugging tool by accident. Now apparently available online, it should allow any user to turn off Secure Boot.

Proprietary Life

  • Scientists smash record for human embryos grown in the lab in revolutionary breakthrough

A human embryo has been grown in a laboratory for twice the length of time than was previously possible in a breakthrough that could “revolutionise” medicine but also raises fresh ethical questions about when life begins.

Since scientists first fertilised an embryo in a test tube in 1969, they have never managed to keep one alive for long after the point at which the foetus implants in the womb, normally about seven days.

However researchers at Cambridge University have now grown embryos for 13 days — a process they only stopped to avoid breaking the current legal limit of about 14 days.

The ability to observe a human embryo as it grows during this “most enigmatic and mysterious” stage of life in a lab should shed new light on genetic diseases and disabilities.

And it could help improve the dismal failure rate of IVF embryos — currently up to 70 per cent do not successfully implant – and lead to better understanding of miscarriages.

  • Netherlands to grow human embryos for research

The Dutch government will allow labs to grow human embryos to be used for research in a limited number of fields, it announced on Friday. Currently scientists have to rely on a limited supply of leftover embryos from in vitro fertilization patients.

“The ban on the cultivation of embryos [has] hampered research which could help with the treatment of diseases on the short to medium-long term,” the government said in a statement, justifying the ethically controversial move.

The cultivation would still have strict conditions applied to it, the statement said. Such embryos can only be used in research related to “infertility, artificial reproduction techniques and hereditary or congenital diseases.”.

  • A Flash of Light Occurs at Moment of Conception

Scientists have discovered that a “breathtaking” flash of light occurs at the moment of conception.

For the first time, researchers from Northwestern University have now demonstrated that when a human sperm first meets an egg a bright zinc spark can be seen, not only a “remarkable” phenomenon but also one that might be a game-changer for in vitro fertilization.

“It was remarkable,” said the study’s co-author Professor Teresa Woodruff. “We discovered the zinc spark just five years ago in the mouse, and to see the zinc radiate out in a burst from each human egg was breathtaking. All of biology starts at the time of fertilization, yet we know next to nothing about the events that occur in the human.”  The researchers say that the size of the flash of light provides valuable information about the health of the eggs. The brighter the flash, the more viable the egg, and thus the better option for in vitro fertilization, which has a high failure rate (around 50%) and often involves clinicians using imprecise means of testing or simply choosing whichever eggs they think appear to be most viable.
“This means if you can look at the zinc spark at the time of fertilization, you will know immediately which eggs are the good ones to transfer in in vitro fertilization,” explained Woodruff. “It’s a way of sorting egg quality in a way we’ve never been able to assess before.”

  • Why Did the Genetic Code of All Life on Earth Suddenly Stop Evolving?

All life on Earth exists thanks to a universal genetic code. This biological rulebook tells our cells how DNA should be translated into life-supporting proteins, without which we couldn’t survive.

Even though the genetic code commands a seemingly immeasurable number of organisms, it also binds us all together as descendents of a shared ancestor—a lingua franca for life.

Yet for all of its diverse and essential properties, the genetic code is static. For some reason unknown to scientists, approximately 3 billion years ago it simply stopped growing. Instead of expanding to encode new combinations of amino acids, and potentially new life, it stagnated at its current size and function. But a new study published today in the journal Science Advances offers an explanation for the genetic code’s mysterious evolutionary limit.

A team of geneticists from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine and the Centre for Genomic Regulation discovered that several billion years ago, the genetic code reached a point of self-preservation. Namely, it could continue evolving and risk mutating the building blocks of life it was responsible for creating, or it could remain limited, albeit functional.

Over millennia, the genetic code evolved to contain “codons” of three nucleotides, which transfer RNA (tRNA) translate into a 20-letter chain of amino acids, leading to the creation of basic proteins. However, at some point in history, transfer RNA hit a functional limit to the number of amino acids it was able to successfully interpret into proteins, the study found. It was at that point the genetic code, and the complexity of organic life, stood relatively still.

Any more than 20 amino acids, and the machinery of gene expression got confused. The results of such erroneous translation were constant mutations “with catastrophic consequences,” according to Ribas.

While the expansion of the genetic code allowed for new tRNA creation, the particular L-shaped cavity of ribosomes—the part of the cell where protein is actually constructed—ultimately allowed for very little variation. If tRNA molecules didn’t adapt to accommodate the specific needs of the ribosome, the efficiency of protein synthesis would be vastly compromised, and fatal for life.

“There came a point when nature was unable to create new tRNAs that differed sufficiently from those already available without causing a problem with the identification of the correct amino acid. And this happened when 20 amino acids were reached,” Ribas explained.

The study’s authors hope their findings can be applied in the field of synthetic biology, and allow for exciting breakthroughs in gene manipulation efforts.

Right now, a novel gene-editing technique called CRISPR/Cas9 is gaining momentum due to its ability to meticulously modify DNA with better results than those of other contemporary technology. And it’s possible that insights regarding the genetic code’s evolution and limitations could help biologists create unique proteins with entirely new functions.

CRISPR-Cas

  • DuPont Pioneer Announces Intentions to Commercialize First CRISPR-Cas Product

DuPont Pioneer today announced waxy corn hybrids as its first commercial agricultural product developed through the application of CRISPR-Cas enabled advanced breeding technology. This next generation of elite waxy corn hybrids is expected to be available to U.S. growers within five years, pending field trials and regulatory reviews.

“We’re applying our 90 years of knowledge of corn biology to develop the next generation of high-quality waxy corn hybrids for the benefit of the entire value chain from growers to processors and end users,” said Neal Gutterson, vice president, research and development for DuPont Pioneer. “Starting with an identity-preserved product as our initial CRISPR-Cas offering allows us to lay a solid foundation for success of future larger volume products from this plant breeding innovation.”

Pioneer is the leading supplier of waxy corn hybrids globally. In the United States, about a half-million acres of waxy corn are grown each year; however, they traditionally yield less than non-waxy corn hybrids. Waxy corn produces a high amylopectin starch content, which is milled for a number of everyday consumer food and non-food uses including processed foods, adhesives and high-gloss paper. Waxy corn is typically grown on contract through a closed-loop production system commonly referred to as “identity-preserved”.

“The next generation of waxy hybrids developed with CRISPR-Cas will represent a step-change in how efficiently we bring elite genetic platforms of high-yielding waxy corn to our customers,” Gutterson said.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently published its response to Pioneer’s “Regulated Article Letter of Inquiry” stating that it does not consider next-generation waxy corn developed with CRISPR-Cas enabled advanced breeding technology as regulated by USDA Biotechnology Regulatory Services.

“DuPont Pioneer believes that CRISPR-Cas as an advanced plant breeding tool holds great promise for maintaining the world’s ability to produce an abundant and healthy food supply. The USDA’s confirmation is an important first step toward clarifying the U.S. regulatory landscape and the development of seed products with CRISPR-Cas technology,” said Gutterson. “We continue to consult with global regulatory bodies and government agencies in order to understand the potential regulations around the world.”

Pioneer is establishing a CRISPR-Cas enabled advanced breeding platform to develop seed products for greater environmental resiliency with characteristics like disease resistance and drought tolerance, in addition to advancing the development of improved hybrid systems. The technology has applicability for all Pioneer crops of interest..

  • CRISPR gene-editing tested in a person for the first time

A Chinese group has become the first to inject a person with cells that contain genes edited using the revolutionary CRISPR–Cas9 technique.

On 28 October, a team led by oncologist Lu You at Sichuan University in Chengdu delivered the modified cells into a patient with aggressive lung cancer as part of a clinical trial at the West China Hospital, also in Chengdu.

Earlier clinical trials using cells edited with a different technique have excited clinicians. The introduction of CRISPR, which is simpler and more efficient than other techniques, will probably accelerate the race to get gene-edited cells into the clinic across the world, says Carl June, who specializes in immunotherapy at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and led one of the earlier studies.

  • DNA Evidence Can Be Fabricated, Scientists Show

Scientists in Israel have demonstrated that it is possible to fabricate DNA evidence, undermining the credibility of what has been considered the gold standard of proof in criminal cases.

The scientists fabricated blood and saliva samples containing DNA from a person other than the donor of the blood and saliva. They also showed that if they had access to a DNA profile in a database, they could construct a sample of DNA to match that profile without obtaining any tissue from that person.

“You can just engineer a crime scene,” said Dan Frumkin, lead author of the paper, which has been published online by the journal Forensic Science International: Genetics. “Any biology undergraduate could perform this.”

Dr. Frumkin is a founder of Nucleix, a company based in Tel Aviv that has developed a test to distinguish real DNA samples from fake ones that it hopes to sell to forensics laboratories.

The planting of fabricated DNA evidence at a crime scene is only one implication of the findings. A potential invasion of personal privacy is another.

Using some of the same techniques, it may be possible to scavenge anyone’s DNA from a discarded drinking cup or cigarette butt and turn it into a saliva sample that could be submitted to a genetic testing company that measures ancestry or the risk of getting various diseases. Celebrities might have to fear “genetic paparazzi,” said Gail H. Javitt of the Genetics and Public Policy Center at Johns Hopkins University.

Tania Simoncelli, science adviser to the American Civil Liberties Union, said the findings were worrisome.

“DNA is a lot easier to plant at a crime scene than fingerprints,” she said. “We’re creating a criminal justice system that is increasingly relying on this technology.”

John M. Butler, leader of the human identity testing project at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, said he was “impressed at how well they were able to fabricate the fake DNA profiles.” However, he added, “I think your average criminal wouldn’t be able to do something like that.”

Junk Food Kills

  • Junk food kills bacteria that protect against obesity, heart disease and cancer, study finds

Strong link between good bacteria, diet and overall health discovered after researchers lived on McDonald’s meals for 10 days straight

Eating junk food kills stomach bacteria which protect against obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, inflammatory bowel conditions and autism, fresh studies have found.

The human gut contains around 3,500 difference microbial species, which together make up some three pounds in weight.

Scientists now believe a diet based on a limited range of highly processed foods, rather than those found in a balanced, healthy diet, can wipe out the number of stomach flora by more than a third.

The discovery could explain why some people put on weight while others don’t, despite eating roughly similar amounts of fat, sugar, protein and carbohydrates.

Defeating Organized Deception

  • WHO Manual Directing “Authorities” on How to Respond to Vaccine Deniers in Public

The endlessly increasing vaccine push on the public, at the behest of pharmaceutical companies, can be looked at as nothing more than a psychological operation (PSYOP). From the European Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) comes the 2016 “Best Practice Guidance 1st Edition: How to Respond to Vocal Vaccine Deniers in Public“. From this guide parents and communities will understand how to see through the simplistic messaging maneuvers and counter the ongoing public PSYOP. The WHO’s guiding document opens on page one with the following statement:

This guidance document provides basic broad principles for a spokesperson of any health authority on how to respond to vocal vaccine deniers. The suggestions are based on psychological research on persuasion, on research in public health, communication studies and on WHO risk
    communication guidelines.

The document centers on how to address “science denialism” for health authorities in a public venue or discussion. The document reads like a marijuana propaganda piece from the 1960’s. According the the WHO, those who question “science” and “experts” are chopped up into three categories: a vaccine refuser, a vaccine skeptic or a vaccine denier. Each one of the three labels, according to the WHO, can be found on what they call the vaccine “hesitancy continuum.” The “vaccine denier” refers to “a member of a subgroup at the extreme end of the hesitancy continuum.” When it comes to corporate bottom lines, the pharmaceutical company lobbyist focuses on the politician or government “official” that can persuade the most people, and maneuver around or through the stop-gap measures to remove medical and health freedom. To these ends, the WHO has created a graphic to address the “probability to change one’s mind to vaccine acceptance.

Fight The Fraud

  • Judge Denies Baker College’s Request for Dismissal in Vaccine Case

The Genesee County Circuit Court has denied the request of Baker College to dismiss or otherwise highly restrict the lawsuit brought by a former nursing student who claims she was wrongly dismissed from the nursing program at Baker’s Owosso campus due to discussions involving vaccines.

Nichole Rolfe is suing Baker College after she was dismissed from the school’s nursing program because she questioned when Baker College instructed students to misrepresent and lie to patients in order to get them vaccinated.

The case stems from two separate classes held in 2013 by two different instructors who, within days of each other, instructed students who were in the midst of clincials with real patients to threaten and panic patients into accepting immunizations. Threats included the withholding of state medical assistance payments, denial of access to newborns, and the giving of false information.

Under Michigan law, patients have the right to choose—and reject—any and all medical treatments offered by hospitals.

  • Nursing Student Dismissed for Refusal to Lie about Vaccines Has Case Continue in Court

In April of 2015, we reported here at Health Impact News that nursing student Nichole Rolfe, formerly Nichole Bruff, was dismissed from her nursing program shortly before graduation after she allegedly refused to commit fraud by lying to patients in order to coerce vaccine compliance, as directed by her instructors.

Nichole fought back with a lawsuit against Baker College.

  • Zika virus declared no longer an international emergency by WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that Zika no longer constitutes an international emergency – warning at the same time that the virus will continue to spread where mosquitoes carrying it are present.

Zika, which is linked to birth defects and neurological complications, has been found in 60 countries since the outbreak was identified last year in Brazil.
