Neoliberal Free Market Reform News of the Day 3-11-2010

Greece hit by strikes over austerity plan – MSNBC – “Riot police fired tear gas to disperse rock-throwing protesters at one point of the demonstration as strikers and protesters marched through the capital, banging drums and chanting slogans such as “no sacrifice for plutocracy,” and “real jobs, higher pay.” People draped banners from apartment buildings reading: “No more sacrifices, war against war.”

No letup in attack on jobs – WSWS – “On Tuesday, the Labor Department reported that the official unemployment rate in January rose in 30 states. Sixteen states had jobless rates higher than the national average of 9.7 percent, including Michigan (14.3 percent), Nevada (13 percent), Rhode Island (12.7 percent), South Carolina (12.6 percent) and California (12.5 percent). Unemployment in California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington DC rose to the highest levels since records began in 1976.”  (and yet somehow we are in a “recovery”?)

S.3081: Enemy Belligerent, Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010 – U.S. Congress – OpenCongress

 OpenCongress

The “Enemy Belligerent, Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010,” introduced by Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman on Thursday with little fanfare, “sets out a comprehensive policy for the detention, interrogation and trial of suspected enemy belligerents who are believed to have engaged in hostilities against the United States by requiring these individuals to be held in military custody, interrogated for their intelligence value and not provided with a Miranda warning,”

The Last Stand for Obamacare’s PR Campaign

by Scott Creighton

It’s a remarkably well orchestrated effort going on right now to pass what is laughingly refered to as “healthcare reform” (read as “insurance industry bailout and Longevity Assurance Program”).

First you have the senate version of the bill passed with all its massive entitlements for the insurance industry, including but not limited to;

1. mandatory enrollment (some new 30 million customers for the industry that President Obama is deriding daily with his stump speeches) forcing Americans to buy into deeply flawed insurance policies…

2. no “public option” to help keep costs inline at a time when the public option and single payer healthcare BOTH poll higher than Obama’s Senate version of this plan…

No Bailouts This Time Around in Iceland (but don’t worry… the IMF is working on them as we speak)

How many times do we have to hear “IMF” when these stories pop up before people start putting 2 and 2 together?

More Fear Mongering from the Global Warming Alarmists

Is it melting glaciers? nooooo

Is it dying polar bears? noooooo

Is it rising sea levels? nooooo

It’s worse than all of that combined…. it’s Evil Ahmadinejad blowing up our troops in Iraq!!!

That’s right. Pass a Clean Energy Climate Plan to keep those evil Iranians from blowing up our Troops!

Me: well, I just have doubts about the IPCC data and how they handled it and the overall human contribution to “global warming” or whatever your PR guys call it these days…

Zealot: YOU HATE THE TROOPS!!! YOU PINKO COMMIE BASTARD! YOU ISLAMOFASCIST DENIER SCUM!!!! YOU”RE WITH US ON CLIMATE CHANGE OR YOU”RE WITH THE TERRORISTS!!!!!

You think I am joking? Watch this.

Obama Solution to Stop Outsourcing – Stop Counting Jobs Outsourced (No, Seriously!)

by MikeIlk, Firedoglake

The numbers are outrageous, sickening even. How can anyone stand to look at them?

Since 2000, the U.S. has lost 5.5 million manufacturing jobs, with 2.1 million of those jobs being lost in the last two years alone. Since 2001, over 42,400 factories have closed in the U.S., and another 90,000 are considered at severe risk of closing. The last time so few were employed in manufacturing was in 1941, before World War II spending pulled that sector out of its Great Depression slump.

Numbers like these make me want to cry.

So President Obama has come up with a big and bold solution to deal with problem. He’s going to shut down the federal office that counts how many jobs are being shipped overseas.

From New York to Liberia, Greg Palast Tracks Vulture Funds Preying on African Debt

(unregulated free market banking running amok throughout the world. The suffering and misery they are causing is unprecedented in modern history. The “terrorists” have nothing on these bastards.)

from Democracy Now

Part 1

Welcome to Liberia in West Africa, where 80 percent of the people survive on less than a single dollar a day. Now these people are being told that they have to pay $28 million to a bunch of financial speculators known as vulture funds. This was not supposed to happen.”
