‘Worst Bush-era policies’ becoming the ‘new normal’: ACLU

by Muriel Kane, Raw Story

From the point of view of civil libertarians, the Obama administration has been an exercise in frustration, with every hopeful sign followed by failures to live up to its own promises.

The ACLU has just issued a report (pdf), titled “Establishing a New Normal: National Security, Civil Liberties, and Human Rights Under the Obama Administration,” which focuses on this pattern of inconsistency.

“The administration has displayed a decidedly mixed record,” explains ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romaro, “resulting, on a range of issues, in the very real danger that the Obama administration will institutionalize some of the most troublesome policies of the previous administration — in essence, creating a troubling ‘new normal.’”

Clinton Appointee Blocks Arizona Immigration Laws Thus Saving Globalization

by Scott Creighton

Well, they made sure the case went before a globalist judge appointed by Bill Clinton and she basically said that officers could not check to see if a detained person was here legally or not because if they were here legally, their “liberty” would be “restricted” for the 60 seconds or so that it would take for the officer to run the check. I wish I were kidding…

“Requiring Arizona law enforcement officials and agencies to determine the immigration status of every person who is arrested burdens lawfully-present aliens because their liberty will be restricted while their status is checked,” Bolton, a Clinton appointee, said in her decision. Huffington Post

White House Neoliberals (Clintonistas) Work With GOP Neoliberals and Democratic Congressional Leadership to Fund More War and Defund Education and Teachers… and Police and Firefighters and Other State Employees

mash-up from HuffPo

The White House veto threat, combined with a GOP filibuster, was enough to defeat the funding bill in the Senate. On July 22nd, the Senate sent the stripped-down war funding bill back to the House, leading to Tuesday’s showdown. Nine years into the war, the Senate approved funding on a voice vote….

[UPDATE: So much for that. Only 102 Democrats joined a dozen Republicans and the war money passed, 308-114.]

… “Once again, war is being paid for with a credit card while investments in our children’s future are tossed aside. These investments — $10 billion for teacher jobs, $1 billion for summer youth employment, $5 billion for Pell grants, $701 million for border security — were cut from the war funding bill coming to the House floor despite being fully paid for and not adding to the budget deficit,”

Karzai Confirms: NATO Killed 52 Civilians in Friday Attack

Rockets Hit House Full of Hiding Civilians

by Jason Ditz, AntiWar

Following up on reports emerging over the weekend, Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s office is confirming that a NATO attack in Sangin District of the Helmand Province struck a houseload of civilians hiding from a nearby battle, and that at least 52 civilians were killed.

The Karzai government has promised an investigation into the killings of the civilians, which were said to have included a large number of women and children, a number of wounded civilians were also reported in the tiny village.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has resulted in increased Unemployment in the U.S.

(… and yet the Clinton’s little puppet, Barack Obama, is trying to sell 3 more NAFTAs to us “as if” we can still be convinced that “free trade’ is good for anyone outside Wall Street or their personal servants in Washington…)

by Mark Vorpahl, Global Research

We will make our case as hard and as well as we can. And, though the fight will be difficult, I deeply believe we will win. And I’d like to tell you why. First of all, because NAFTA means jobs. American jobs, and good-paying American jobs. If I didn’t believe that, I wouldn’t support this agreement. Bill Clinton, 1993

Leaked documents expose imperialist war in Afghanistan

(Task Force 373 – think “Caravan of Death”  (Chile), “Escuadrón de la Muerte ” (El Salvadore), “Battalion 316″  (Honduras), “Contras” (Nicaragua), and SAVAK in Iran.. the list goes on and on… )

by Alex Lantier, WSWS

On Sunday, the WikiLeaks web site posted 91,731 American military documents on the US-NATO occupation of Afghanistan, covering the period from January 2004 to December 2009. The release was timed to coincide with articles on these revelations in the New York Times, the British Guardian and the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel, all of which had received the documents several weeks ago.

The documents make clear that the occupation of Afghanistan is a filthy imperialist war. Popular resistance and protest demonstrations are drowned in blood, US death squads operate at will under a media blackout, and Washington and NATO collaborate with a narrow elite of corrupt warlords and Afghan officers.

BP Hires Prison Labor to Clean Up Spill While Coastal Residents Struggle

(Remember back when the cameras were not permitted around the clean-up crews? Yeah, it’s because many of them were prisoners forced to work on the toxic clean-up for next to nothing.)

by Abe Louise Young, CommonDreams

In the first few days after BP’s Deepwater Horizon wellhead exploded, spewing crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, cleanup workers could be seen on Louisiana beaches wearing scarlet pants and white t-shirts with the words “Inmate Labor” printed in large red block letters. Coastal residents, many of whom had just seen their livelihoods disappear, expressed outrage at community meetings; why should BP be using cheap or free prison labor when so many people were desperate for work? The outfits disappeared overnight.

Netanyahu: I deceived US to destroy Oslo accords

(In this video, it appears as if Bibi is boasting about how he undermined the Oslo accords, how they are smashing the Palestinians to undermine Arafat, and how “absurd” it is that “80%” of the U.S. population supports what Israel is doing. The sound is disabled for some reason but it appears as if the English captions sync-up with the body language we can see in the video. Also of note, this video was being talked about and written about prior to it’s translation by people like Jonathan Cook, so my guess is the translation is accurate.)

There is one video Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, must be praying never gets posted on YouTube with English subtitles. To date, the 10-minute segment has been broadcast only in Hebrew on Israel’s Channel 10. [Editor’s note: A version of the Natanyahu video with English subtitles is now available and can be viewed, together with the translated English transcripy, here.]
