All the presidential candidates drill home a message on the economy, economy, economy, economy, arguing that they know how to improve it.

Of 11 GOP candidates and the Democrat seeking re-election, which actually earned a degree in economics?

Charles “Buddy” Roemer

Just one: the little-known Buddy Roemer, a former governor of Louisiana who has campaigned in Iowa just twice this year, most recently in May.

Five studied politics in undergraduate school: President Barack Obama, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, and U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter.

Other topics of study: biology, animals, computers, English, math, history, the law.

Three have master’s of business administration degrees: Roemer, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.

Here’s their educational qualifications:

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Bachelor’s degree in political science, 1983, Columbia University; law degree, 1991, Harvard Law School.

MICHELE BACHMANN: Bachelor’s degree in political science and English, 1978, Winona State College. Law degree, 1986, Oral Roberts University. Master of law degree, with a focus on the American legal system, 1988, College of William & Mary.

HERMAN CAIN: Bachelor’s degree in math, 1967, Morehouse College. Master’s degree in computer science, 1971, Purdue University.

NEWT GINGRICH: Bachelor’s degree in history, 1965, Emory University. Master’s degree in European history, 1968, Tulane University. Doctorate, 1971, European History, Tulane.

JON HUNTSMAN: Attended the University of Utah, then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international politics.

GARY JOHNSON: Bachelor’s degree in political science, 1975, University of New Mexico

THADDEUS MCCOTTER: Bachelor’s degree in politics, 1987, University of Detroit. Law degree, 1990, University of Detroit.

RON PAUL: Bachelor’s degree in biology, 1957, Gettysburg College. Medical degree, 1961, Duke University.

RICK PERRY: Bachelor’s degree in animal science, 1972, Texas A&M.

BUDDY ROEMER: Bachelor’s in economics, 1964, and MBA in finance, 1967, Harvard University.

MITT ROMNEY: Bachelor’s degree in English, 1971, Brigham Young University. Master’s of business administration and law degree, 1975, Harvard University.

RICK SANTORUM: Bachelor’s degree in political science, 1980, Pennsylvania State University. Master’s of business administration, 1981, University of Pittsburgh. Law degree, 1986, Dickinson School of Law.
