The Victory Against You in the Silent War is Your Silence
The Amoral Imperative
Primatologist Jane Goodall was speaking in Salt Lake City at a sold-out event Friday evening about her work and the future of chimpanzees. But in the afternoon, she lent her fame and clout to a more controversial cause. Goodall appeared with Steven Druker, the author of a book that aims to wipe out genetically modified organisms from the world’s food supply.
In a talk sponsored by the Pax Natura Foundation, Jane Goodall thanked Steven Druker for writing his book, “Altered Genes, Twisted Truth.” She herself wrote the forward and she said the book substantiated her concerns that genetically engineered foods were dangerous.
“We’re poisoning the land, we’re poisoning animals, and I truly believe we’re poisoning ourselves,” Goodall said. She pointed to superbugs that have become resistant to pesticides, weeds resistant to herbicides, and isolated animal studies in Europe and Australia where she said rats and pigs suffered from a variety of health issues when consuming genetically engineered crops.
- Sheriff’s BOMBSHELL About Orders Given In Baltimore Could Mean
A Maryland sheriff, who traveled to Baltimore to assist his fellow law enforcement officers in quelling the insurrection, dropped a bombshell about orders he was hearing as the protests raged on.
Wicomico County Sheriff Michael Lewis also is a former sergeant with the Maryland State Police and has had a 31-year career in law enforcement, according to CBS Baltimore. So, he was shocked when he heard for the first time in his career orders for police to pull away from the protests and let the city burn.
- Judge Rebuffs U.S. in Rejecting Extradition of Ukraine Billionaire
In a defeat for the United States, an Austrian judge refused Thursday to order the extradition of Dmitri V. Firtash, a Ukrainian billionaire and onetime patron of the country’s ousted president, Viktor F. Yanukovych, siding with defense lawyers who said the American request was politically motivated.
Mr. Firtash, who made his fortune in Ukraine’s notoriously corrupt natural gas industry, has been charged by federal prosecutors in Chicago with racketeering and other crimes. He and his associates are accused of having paid $18.5 million in bribes to officials in India to secure a titanium-mining deal that never materialized.
The ruling, by Judge Christoph Bauer of the Landesgerichtsstrasse Regional Court in Vienna, amounted to a scathing rebuke of the Justice and State Departments, and reflected the diminished credibility of the United States authorities, even in the eyes of a European ally.
- Maker of Children’s Tylenol pleads guilty for selling contaminated drugs
U.S News reports that children’s and infant’s liquid Tylenol was knowingly sold containing heavy metals for over a year. McNeil Consumer Healthcare, which is a subsidiary of the Johnson & Johnson company, was given a federal criminal charge over the issue – to which the company plead guilty. The contaminated medicine that was sold was over-the-counter, so an unknown number of people purchased it and gave it to their children, thinking it was a safe product.
Nickel, chromium, and iron particles were integrated into the liquid medicine during the manufacturing process and the company knew about this for at least a year – yet, did nothing to prevent or correct the contamination. To resolve the case and get the Justice Department to back off, Reuter’s reports the company agreed to pay a $25 million fine. It continues to make infant and children’s liquid Tylenol.

NASA Study: Plants Purify Indoor Air
In the late 1980’s, NASA studied 27 species of houseplants to see if they were effective at purifying air in space facilities. What they found were numerous plants that effectively filtered out common volatile organic compounds (VOCs), some better than others. Thankfully, we can reap the benefits of these findings here on earth as well, by adding them to our homes to filter out airborne chemicals, which offgas from carpets, paints, cookware, and couches, to name a few.
Not only will vibrant greenery afford your home cleaner air, it will also add an element of beauty and, as science is now showing, plants also create a more relaxing, restful environment. Studies have found that indoor plants can help reduce stress levels, relieve tension, and increase the speed of healing. A study conducted in 2012 compared the physiological response between people transplanting real flowers, and a control group of people transplanting fake flowers. What they found was the activity of transplanting real flowers “promoted comfortable, soothed, and natural feelings, compared to the control activity.” If the action of transplanting flowers has these benefits, it’s likely that the action of watering, admiring, and caring for plants provides us these benefits as well.
- UPDATE: Minnesota Farmer Victorious in Court!
In the story of David and Heidi Berglund from last week, was a glimpse into the over regulatory nature of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). The MDA threatened a peaceful family with $500 per day fines for feeding their community.
On March 9, 2015, 175-200 community members sat quietly in the courtroom in support of the Berglund family.
According to Greg Gentz, who attended the hearing and reported on it,
“Judge Cuzzo stated that he was “staying the order of inspection” that had previously been issued by him in his court due to the issues that were presented at today’s hearing. He further clarified to Middendorf that the previous order of inspection could not be used, at this time, by the MDA to inspect Lake View Natural Dairy. He said that he is going to take up to 90 days (he commented that he hoped to not take that long) to review the arguments presented to determine the jurisdictional validity of the order (whether the MDA has the right to make the inspection in the first place). Judge Cuzzo will issue his ruling in writing.”
While this is a positive development in the case, it is certainly not over yet. If the judge’s final ruling is in favor of the farm, it is likely that that MDA will pursue an appeal. The ultimate decision here will set a precedent not only for Minnesota, but one that other states could follow.
- Cracking the Cholesterol Myth: How Statins Harm The Body and Mind
A new study finds the chemical war against cholesterol using statin drugs was justified through statistical deception and the cover up of over 300 adverse health effects documented in the biomedical literature.
Better safe than sorry, right? This is the logic that defines the grasp that the pharmaceutical company has on our psyche. Perhaps your mother, father, brother, and boyfriend have been recommended cholesterol-lowering medication, just to help hedge their bets around a possible chest-clutching demise. In fact, recent guidelines have expanded the pool of potential statin medication recipients, so that there are very few of us who seem to be walking around with acceptable levels of artery clogging sludge.
But how is it that drug companies got a foothold? How have they convinced doctors that their patients need these medications, and need them now? They are banking (literally) on the fact that you haven’t brushed up on statistics in a while.
It turns out that a common sleight of hand in the medical literature is the popularization of claims around “relative risk reduction” which can make an effect appear meaningful, when the “absolute risk reduction” reveals its insignificance. In this way, 100 people are treated with statin medications to offer 1 person benefit, and the change from a 2% to a 1% heart attack rate is billed a 50% reduction rather than a 1% improvement, which is what it actually is.
- So-called ‘Trillion Meal Study’ of GMO safety is junk A new study about the purported safety of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, was released to the public this month by former Monsanto employee Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam. The Monsanto Company is best known for creating and marketing genetically modified seeds that contain their own pesticides or which are designed to withstand applications of the company’s flagship herbicide Roundup (active ingredient: glyphosate).
Dr. Van Eenennaam’s study has been loudly touted by pro-GMO talking-heads, who claim it has “ended the debate” about the safety of GMOs in the food chain. The claim is impressive: over 100 billion animals consuming a total exceeding 1 trillion meals of genetically modified grain over a 19-year period show no statistical difference in health when compared with livestock fed a conventional diet. First, it’s important to scrutinize the “100 billion animals” the author claims to have studied.
Nearly 95 percent of the approximately 100 billion animals in the study are broiler chickens. These chickens would have a natural lifespan of about 5 years, but they don’t live anywhere near that long in food production. Most are killed in their first 49 days.
In other words, this isn’t a long-term study of animals living a full life-cycle. Instead, it’s mostly a study of 19 years’ worth of data on 49 day-old chickens.
- Vaccines and Production of Negative Genetic Changes in Humans
Vaccination and Genetic Change: Mobility of Genetic Material Between Life Forms:
One of the indications that vaccinations may in fact be changing the genetic structure of humans became evident in September of 1971, when scientists at the University of Geneva made the discovery that biological substances entering directly into the bloodstream could become part of human genetic structure. Originally, Japanese bacteriologists discovered that bacteria of one species transferred their own specific antibiotic resistance to bacteria of an entirely different species. Dr. Maurice Stroun and Dr. Philip Anker in the Department of Plant Physiology at the University of Geneva, began to accumulate evidence that the transfer of genetic information is not confined to bacteria, but can also occur between bacteria and higher plants and animals. According to an article in World Medicine on September 22, 1971, “Geneva scientists are convinced that normal animal and plant cells shed DNA, and that this DNA is taken up by other cells in the organism.”
In one experiment, scientists in Geneva extracted the auricles of frog hearts and dipped them for several hours in a suspension of bacteria. Afterward, they found a high percentage of RNA-DNA hybridization between bacterial DNA extracted from bacteria of the same species as that used in the experiment and titrated DNA extracted from the auricles which had been dipped in the bacterial suspension. Bacterial DNA had been absorbed by the animal cells. This phenomenon has been dubbed transcession. There is evidence that this kind of phenomenon is happening all the time within the human body. It is conceivable, for example, that heart damage following rheumatic fever could the the result of the immune system reacting to its own cells producing a foreign RNA complex after absorption of foreign DNA.
In Science magazine, November 10, 1972, bacterial RNA was demonstrated in frog brain cells after a bacterial peritoneal infection. In the April 1973 issue of the Journal of Bacteriology, transcription of spontaneously released bacterial DNA was found to be incorporated into cellular nuclei of frog auricles. Studies by Phillipe Anker and Maurice Stroun have indicated spontaneous release of DNA material from mammalian cells, spontaneous transfer of DNA from bacteria to higher organisms, spontaneous transfer of DNA between cells of higher organisms, release of RNA by mammalian cells, and biological activity of released complexes containing RNA.
Malignant Cellular Transformations Caused By Foreign DNA:
There is evidence that freely circulating foreign DNA can cause malignancy. In a 1977 issue of International Review of Cytology, Volume 51, Anker and Stroun discuss the possible effects of foreign DNA causing malignant cell transformations. When foreign DNA is transcribed into a cell of a different organism, “this general biological event is related to the uptake by cells of spontaneously released bacterial DNA, thus suggesting the existence of circulating DNA. In view of the malignant transformations obtained with DNA, the oncogenic (cancer-causing) role of circulating DNA is postulated.”
The discovery in 1975 that viruses causing cancer in animals had a special enzyme called reverse transcriptase makes the problem even more interesting. These kind of viruses are called RNA viruses. When an RNA virus has the reverse transcriptase enzyme within its structure, it allows the virus to actually form strands of DNA which easily integrate with the DNA of the host cell which it infects.
- Transcription of spontaneously released bacterial deoxyribonucleic acid in frog auricles. ABSTRACT After frog auricles have been in contact with a suspension of bacteria or bacteria-free supernatant fluid, newly synthesized bacterial ribonucleic acid (RNA) is recovered in animal cells.
- Vaccination registration system will destroy medical freedom, mirroring gun registration and demise of gun rights
Consider a new policy that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is quietly pushing: A nationwide Immunization Information Systems concept that would require everyone to register vaccine information into a government database.
It’s an idea that critics believe is another first step toward nationwide vaccine mandates.
Vaccine registration will be like gun registration
Leslie Manookian, writer and director of the movie, “The Greater Good,” wrote in a blog posted on the movie’s web site that the CDC has already tipped its hand.
“To the casual observer, tracking vaccination status may seem innocuous but this information can be used to bully, pressure, and even coerce people to follow national vaccination guidelines even if those people have educated themselves and chosen a different vaccination schedule or to avoid vaccinations entirely,” she wrote.
“Federal legislation already exists that allows Federal health officials to forcibly vaccinate people against their will in the event a flu pandemic is declared. … CDC has openly stated that vaccine registries are a tool to identify areas of ‘undervaccination’ so that they can be addressed and brought into ‘compliance,'” she continued.
The CDC document (found here) further states:
Assessing vaccination coverage compliance with local requirements and exemption levels as children enter kindergarten is essential for identifying and addressing areas of undervaccination and reducing outbreaks of vaccine-preventable disease and accompanying morbidity and mortality.
It’s happened enough times to know by now – when the government wants you to register an activity, somebody in power is already looking at ways to control, manage or regulate that activity.

- Whooping Cough Outbreaks Traced to Change in Vaccine
The recent outbreaks of whooping cough in the United States may be due, in part, to a change made two decades ago to vaccine ingredients, a new study finds.
In 2012, the United States had about 48,000 cases of whooping cough (also called pertussis) — the most cases since 1955. Although the numbers dropped in 2013 and 2014 to about 29,000 cases yearly, there are still far more cases now than in decades past. Between 1965 and 2002, there were no more than 10,000 cases yearly.
Researchers have proposed a number of ideas for the increase, including increased awareness of the disease and better diagnostic techniques. Others have suggested that fewer people were getting the vaccine, and some thought that the new vaccine’s ingredients were less effective.
In the new study, researchers tested these theories using mathematical models. They used an enormous data set from a variety of sources on whooping cough cases in the U.S. from 1950 to 2009. [Tiny & Nasty: Images of Things That Make Us Sick]
They found that a change in vaccine ingredients was the best explanation for the recent whooping cough outbreaks, according to the study, published today (April 23) in the journal PLOS ONE Computational Biology.
- Top gov’t. scientists say no to vaccines for their kids
Los Alamos, New Mexico
“The combined death rate from scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping cough and measles among children up to fifteen shows that nearly 90 percent of the total decline in mortality between 1860 and 1965 had occurred before the introduction of antibiotics and widespread immunization. In part, this recession may be attributed to improved housing and to a decrease in the virulence of micro-organisms, but by far the most important factor was a higher host-resistance due to better nutrition.” —Ivan Illich, Medical Nemesis, Bantam Books, 1977
Albuquerque Journal, 3/20, “Los Alamos schools top NM in vaccine exemptions”, reports:
2.3% of kids in Los Alamos public schools don’t get vaccinated. Their parents have received exemptions.
That’s the highest rate of non-vaccination in the state.
We’re talking about parents who work at the US Los Alamos Labs.
People with advanced degrees in science.
People who work for the federal government.
You would think the vaccine rate in that environment would stand at 100%, no questions asked.
What do these people know? Why are they opting out of vaccinations for their kids?
Those are hard questions to answer. Very hard.

- “Business of Being Born” Explores Midwife-Attended Home Births
If you want a better birth experience, you may want to stay out of the hospital. Women are becoming increasingly disenchanted with their hospital birth experiences for a number of reasons.
With insurance companies forcing hospitals to herd patients in and out as quickly as possible, many women report their birth experience feels rushed, impersonal and sanitized.
The documentary “Business of Being Born,” produced by Rikki Lake, explores the home birth experience from the vantage point of expectant moms, dads, and midwives. If you are planning a family, I strongly encourage you to watch.
Home births in the US have been on the rise for the past 10 years, increasing from 1.26 percent of births in 2011 to 1.36 percent in 2012.1,2 This article addresses the pros and cons of home birthing versus hospital birthing, and other important factors to consider before deciding on a birth plan.
Massive Study Finds Home Births Safe for Low-Risk Pregnancies
The largest study ever performed on home births was published in 2014 in the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health3 and involved almost 17,000 cases. The study overwhelmingly confirmed across-the-board health benefits for low-risk mothers choosing to give birth at home with a midwife.

Just Cuz: We Sez So
It’s no secret that Americans have trouble with scientific authority. We are, after all, a country nearly half composed of creationists who think humans have been around for only 10,000 years or less.
And experts don’t just suffer at the hands of religious and political ideologues — they also get flak from their own presumed academic allies. A group of scholars sometimes dubbed “postmodernists” — no longer trendy, but they were in the 1990s — has delighted in pointing out that scientific experts themselves nourish all kinds of biases, and can be quite closed-minded in their own way.
But just as it was once academically fashionable to dis experts, the worm is now turning, and many are now standing up for them again. And to that trend, we can now add empirical evidence in experts’ favor, thanks to a fascinating new study out by Yale law professor and science communication researcher Dan Kahan and a team of researchers and legal scholars (including one judge).
- UN chief praises pope for framing climate change as moral imperative, says encyclical
The U.N. chief has praised Pope Francis for framing climate change as an urgent moral imperative, saying his upcoming encyclical combined with a new round of U.N. climate talks in Paris provide an “unprecedented opportunity” to create a more sustainable future for the planet.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon opened a Vatican conference on the environment Tuesday that is a key part of the Holy See’s rollout of Francis’ eagerly awaited encyclical, which is expected in June.
Ban told Vatican officials and faith leaders from several different traditions that there is large consensus between religious leaders and scientists that climate change is real, that humans must change their behavior to stop it and that “protecting our environment is an urgent moral imperative and sacred duty for all people of faith and conscience.”
Exposing Moral Fraud
So renewable energy is green? Talk about the opposite.
T. Edward Nickens via Audubon:
It seems to defy common sense that trees from forests in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and other southern states could be cut, trucked to a mill, pulverized and pelletized, shipped to a seaport, sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, and delivered to a power plant in the Netherlands, all in the name of reducing global warming. Yet that’s what’s happening. And during the past five years, such an unlikely scenario has spawned an entirely new industry. Conservationists are concerned that this latest rush to purportedly green energy is not only a carbon emissions boondoggle but a potential train wreck for wildlife and some of the most diverse forests remaining in North America.
The volume of pellets being shipped overseas is exploding. Exports from North America to Europe doubled in two years, to 4.7 million tons in 2013. Southern forests accounted for nearly two-thirds of that volume. At the new Enviva Biomass pellet plant in northeastern North Carolina, a transfer truck is filled with wood pellets about every 28 minutes, each one bound for Europe.
That continent’s appetite for wood pellets is fueled by the European Union’s 2020 climate and energy package, which set binding goals for reducing greenhouse gases, increasing energy produced by renewable resources, and improving overall energy efficiency. The basis of the flawed logic leading to U.S. wood being burned to power Europe, conservationists say, is an accounting formula: According to E.U. policy, wood pellets are considered a carbon-neutral fuel source, based on the principle that regenerating forests will eventually recapture the carbon released when the trees were cut. But a growing chorus of scientists and conservationists points to new research showing that harvesting, transporting, and burning trees for large-scale energy production actually produces a “carbon debt” that isn’t repaid for 35 to 50 years—an eon in the rapidly shrinking timeline of climate change.
- Top scientists start to examine fiddled global warming figures
Last month, we are told, the world enjoyed “its hottest March since records began in 1880”. This year, according to “US government scientists”, already bids to outrank 2014 as “the hottest ever”. The figures from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were based, like all the other three official surface temperature records on which the world’s scientists and politicians rely, on data compiled from a network of weather stations by NOAA’s Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN).
But here there is a puzzle. These temperature records are not the only ones with official status. The other two, Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) and the University of Alabama (UAH), are based on a quite different method of measuring temperature data, by satellites. And these, as they have increasingly done in recent years, give a strikingly different picture. Neither shows last month as anything like the hottest March on record, any more than they showed 2014 as “the hottest year ever”.
Back in January and February, two items in this column attracted more than 42,000 comments to the Telegraph website from all over the world. The provocative headings given to them were “Climategate the sequel: how we are still being tricked by flawed data on global warming” and “The fiddling with temperature data is the biggest scientific scandal”.
A “blob” of warm water has been contributing to the weird weather, producing effects similar to what climate change brings, scientists have found.
By April this year, the blob has been located off Washington’s shores, squished against the coast while extending 1,000 miles offshore between Mexico and Alaska. According to Bond, weather models are indicating that the blob will continue until at least the end of 2015.
A paper authored by Meghan Cronin, Nate Mantua and Howard Freeland explored the origins of the blob, finding that the water mass is related to the persistent ridge of high pressure that led to calmer oceans during the past two winters where not as much heat was lost to the cold air above. This means that the warmer winter being experienced has nothing to do with more heating but less cooling.
When scientists explored the blob’s effect on marine life, they saw that fish in the West Coast were swimming to unusual places, supporting recent findings that ecosystems are suffering and warm, less nutritious Pacific Ocean water is disrupting the food web.

Potential Fukushima link not being investigated [because it is nonsense]
According to media reports, no one knows what has caused the unusually warm Tropical waters responsible for all of these climate and ecological effects. But some have asked whether radioactive material emitted into the ocean by the Fukushima disaster might not be partially responsible.
- Researchers think Axial Seamount off Northwest coast is erupting – right on schedule
Axial Seamount, an active underwater volcano located about 300 miles off the coast of Oregon and Washington, appears to be erupting – after two scientists had forecast that such an event would take place there in 2015.
Geologists Bill Chadwick of Oregon State University and Scott Nooner of the University of North Carolina Wilmington made their forecast last September during a public lecture and followed it up with blog posts and a reiteration of their forecast just last week at a scientific workshop.
They based their forecast on some of their previous research – funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which showed how the volcano inflates and deflates like a balloon in a repeatable pattern as it responds to magma being fed into the seamount.
Since last Friday, the region has experienced thousands of tiny earthquakes – a sign that magma is moving toward the surface – and the seafloor dropped by 2.4 meters, or nearly eight feet, also a sign of magma being withdrawn from a reservoir beneath the summit. Instrumentation recording the activity is part of the NSF-funded Ocean Observatories Initiative. William Wilcock of the University of Washington first observed the earthquakes.
“It isn’t clear yet whether the earthquakes and deflation at Axial are related to a full-blown eruption, or if it is only a large intrusion of magma that hasn’t quite reached the surface,” said Chadwick, who works out of OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport and also is affiliated with NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. “There are some hints that lava did erupt, but we may not know for sure until we can get out there with a ship.”
In any case, the researchers say, such an eruption is not a threat to coastal residents. The earthquakes at Axial Seamount are small and the seafloor movements gradual and thus cannot cause a tsunami.
- Aalto University helps Native Americans relocate after concerns of an impending tsunami
Aalto University has received a rare opportunity to collaborate with a little-known Native American tribe from the Pacific Northwest. According to Aalto University Professor Trev Harris a natural disaster is threatening to wipe out their reservation in Washington State. They have started a “Move to Higher Ground” project to relocate their community.
According to Professor Trev Harris of Aalto University, the Quileute tribe of La Push, Washington holds a ritual each year, where every woman, man and child in the reservation summons local whales, dolphins, sharks, seals and other marine species to the community’s beach by playing drums.
“The tribe’s chief then interprets the sounds they make”, says Harris.
Harris says tribal leaders have received information from the Pacific Ocean whales that a tsunami would soon hit their community. La Push is located at the intersection of three tectonic plates, and is prone to earthquakes of a 9-point magnitude.
The tribe started to make plans to move their community to higher ground. It is now seeking potential funding from both the State of Washington and the federal government to fund the relocation.
- Our climate models are WRONG: Global warming has slowed – and recent changes are down to ‘natural variability’, says study The research, uses observed data, rather than the more commonly used climate models, to estimate decade-to-decade variability.
- Research Highlight: Arctic Sea Ice Loss Likely To Be Reversible Scenarios of a sea ice tipping point leading to a permanently ice-free Arctic Ocean were based on oversimplified arguments.
New research by Till Wagner and Ian Eisenman, scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, resolves a long-running debate over irreversible Arctic sea ice loss.
Ever since the striking record minimum Arctic sea ice extent in 2007, the ominous scenario of a sea ice tipping point has been a fixture in the public debate surrounding man-made climate change and a contingency for which Arctic-bordering countries have prepared.
For decades, scientists have been concerned about such a point of no return, beyond which sea ice loss is irreversible. This concern was supported by mathematical models of the key physical processes (known as process models) that were believed to drive sea ice changes. The process models forecasted that increased global warming would push the Arctic into an unstoppable cascade of melting that ceases only when the ocean becomes ice-free.
Implications of a permanently ice-free Arctic for the environment and for national and economic security are significant, driving deep interest in predictive capabilities in the region.
Wagner and Eisenman’s research was co-funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and by the National Science Foundation. It supports the goals of the Navy’s U.S. Arctic Roadmap, which calls for an assessment of changes in the Arctic Ocean to clarify the national security challenges for future naval operations as this strategic region becomes increasingly accessible.
“The Navy has broad interest in the evolution of the Arctic,” said the ONR’s Frank Herr. “Sea ice dynamics are a critical component of the changing environmental picture. Our physical models lack important details on the processes controlling ice formation and melting, thus ONR is conducting a series of experimental efforts on sea ice, open water processes, acoustics, and circulation.”
- How Climate Model Complexity Influences Sea Ice Stability Record lows in Arctic sea ice extent are making frequent headlines in recent years. The change in albedo when sea ice is replaced by open water introduces a nonlinearity that has sparked an ongoing debate about the stability of the Arctic sea ice cover and the possibility of Arctic “tipping points”. Previous studies identified instabilities for a shrinking ice cover in two types of idealized climate models: (i) annual-mean latitudinally-varying diffusive energy balance models (EBMs) and (ii) seasonally-varying single-column models (SCMs). The instabilities in these low-order models stand in contrast with results from comprehensive global climate models (GCMs), which typically do not simulate any such instability. To help bridge the gap between low-order models and GCMs, we develop an idealized model that includes both latitudinal and seasonal variations. The model reduces to a standard EBM or SCM as limiting cases in the parameter space, thus reconciling the two previous lines of research. We find that the stability of the ice cover vastly increases with the inclusion of spatial communication via meridional heat transport or a seasonal cycle in solar forcing, being most stable when both are included. If the associated parameters are set to values that correspond to the current climate, the ice retreat is reversible and there is no instability when the climate is warmed. The two parameters have to be reduced by at least a factor of 3 for instability to occur. This implies that the sea ice cover may be substantially more stable than has been suggested in previous idealized modeling studies.
- The Oceanic Heat Budget
Overall, Earth gains heat at the top of the tropical atmosphere, and it loses heat at the top of the polar atmosphere. The atmospheric and oceanic circulation together must transport heat from low to high latitudes to balance the gains and losses. This north-south transport is called the meridional transport.
How much heat is carried by the ocean and how much by the atmosphere? The sum of the meridional heat transport by the ocean and atmosphere together is calculated accurately from the divergence of the zonal average of the heat budget measured at the top of the atmosphere by satellites. To make the calculation, we assume steady state transports over many years so that any long-term net heat gain or loss through the top of the atmosphere must be balanced by a meridional transport and not by heat storage in the ocean or atmosphere. So let’s start at the top of the atmosphere.
Heat Budget at the top of the Atmosphere
Heat flux through the top of the atmosphere is measured by radiometers on satellites.
- Insolation is calculated from the solar constant and observations of reflected sunlight made by meteorological satellites and by special satellites such as the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment Satellite.
- Back radiation is measured by infrared radiometers on the satellites.
- The difference between insolation and net infrared radiation is the net heat flux across the top of the atmosphere.
Errors arise from calibration of instruments, and from inaccurate information about the angular distribution of reflected and emitted radiation. Satellite instruments tend to measure radiation propagating vertically upward, not radiation at large angles from vertical, and radiation at these angles is usually calculated not measured.
The sum of the meridional heat transported by the atmosphere and the oceans is calculated from the top of the atmosphere budget. First average the satellite observations in the zonal direction, to obtain a zonal average of the heat flux at the top of the atmosphere. Then calculate the meridional derivative of the zonal mean flux to calculate the north-south flux divergence. The divergence must be balanced by the heat transport by the atmosphere and the ocean across each latitude band.
Oceanic Heat Transport
Oceanic heat transport are calculated three ways:
- Surface Flux Method calculates the heat flux through the sea surface from measurements of wind, insolation, air, and sea temperature, and cloudiness using bulk formulas. The fluxes are integrated to obtain the zonal average of the heat flux (Figure 5.7). Finally, the meridional derivative of the net flux gives the flux divergence, which must be balanced by heat transport in the ocean.
- Direct Method calculates the heat transport from values of current velocity and temperature measured from top to bottom along a zonal section spanning an ocean basin. The flux is the product of northward velocity and heat content derived from the temperature measurement.
- Residual Method first calculates the atmospheric heat transport from atmospheric measurements or the output of numerical weather models. This is the direct method applied to the atmosphere. The atmospheric trans-port is subtracted from the total meridional transport calculated from the top-of-the-atmosphere heat flux to obtain the oceanic contribution as a residual (Figure 5.11).
Various calculations of oceanic heat transports, such as those shown in Figure 5.11, tend to be in agreement, and the error bars shown in the figure are realistic.
Betting Reality On Simulation
- Puzzle of Moon’s origin resolved
Simulations show that Earth probably collided with an unnervingly similar sister planet to form our lunar neighbour.
The ‘giant impact’ hypothesis, first proposed in the 1970s, suggests that the Moon was formed from the debris scattered when a Mars-sized planet slammed into the early Earth some 4.5 billion years ago. This fits well with what we know about the Moon, including its mass and lack of any significant iron core.
But the theory also implies that the Moon is made up mostly of impactor material. Since lunar and Earth rocks have such similar compositions, this suggests that Earth and the planet that smacked into it resembled each other too. They would have needed to be sister planets, with a relationship much closer than that of any other planetary bodies we have studied in our Solar System. The odds of this being possible were thought to be around a 1% chance, or “uncomfortably rare”, according to Robin Canup, a planetary researcher at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado1.
Now it seems that the scenario is not so far-fetched, says Hagai Perets, an astrophysicist at the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. He and his colleagues performed simulations of the Solar System’s formation, to investigate how similar planets tend to be to their last giant impactor. They estimated that for 20% to 40% of collisions, the two bodies would be sufficiently similar to explain the Moon’s composition — considerably better odds. The findings are published in Nature2.
Simulated Security Warrantlessly
- Obama Administration Releases Heavily Censored Version of 6-Year-Old Secret Report Casting Doubt on Legality and Effectiveness of Bush’s Warrantless Spying After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the George W. Bush administration ordered the National Security Agency (NSA) to ignore the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 by beginning the secret warrantless surveillance of international phone calls, emails and data without going through the Judicial Branch of government. This surveillance evolved into a program called Stellarwind. Now, newly declassified documents show that the data obtained from Stellarwind was so secret that it was not useful in tracking terrorists.
- 94.2 percent of “terror plots” manufactured by DoJ The recent arrests on terrorism-related charges of six young Somali-Americans from Minneapolis and others throughout the United States have prompted renewed questions over the issue of entrapment, and over the degree of real security achieved by disrupting plots that law-enforcement had helped shape.
- US law enforcement accused of using entrapment to ensnare ‘terrorists’
The relationships that law enforcement had with some of the alleged has led to controversy in many cases tackled by the FBI and police departments across the U.S. Defenders argue that it plays a vital role in catching those seeking to carry out acts of violence or join radical groups. Critics, including many civil rights groups, say law-enforcement operatives or civilians working with them often egg on suspects to commit crimes they would not necessarily have otherwise. In its most egregious instances, it can result in the entrapment of otherwise harmless — or mentally ill — individuals.
With the rise of ISIL, there has been a renewed effort to counter potential threats on U.S. soil, including cases in which informants have played key — and some say controversial — roles.
“We have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states,” FBI Director James Comey said in February. The message of ISIL in particular “resonates with troubled souls, people seeking meaning in some horribly misguided way,” he added. “Those people exist in every state.”‘We have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all
50 states …people seeking meaning in some horribly misguided way.’
In one recent case, John T. Booker Jr. (also known as Mohammed Abdullah Hassan), 20, was charged in April with attempting to use what law enforcement officers termed a weapon of mass destruction — a device he believed was a vehicle bomb — at Fort Riley military base in Kansas. He was also accused of knowingly trying to provide material support and resources to ISIL.
- The Supreme Court Stole Your Right to CHECK the FEDS POWER
What do you call a situation where the law is ignored? Tyranny.
What about where the law is turned on its head? Fraud.
What about where the government steals the rights of the people to expand its own powers? Corruption.
I think those are fair answers to those questions. Now let me ask you this. If I tell you that you have A Right to petition the government for a redress of grievances to protect yourself against things like I just set out, and that the government cannot make any law abridging that right, does that leave you with the impression that you in fact have that right? Of course it does.
Well, the first amendment gives everyone of us exactly that right. People don’t know this because all they ever hear about the first amendment is free speech and religion and press. And when you finish reading this article you will understand why that is all they know. So let’s get started. Here is what the first amendment says:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Do you see it now? That is a HUGE right. “To petition” is a legal term. A petition is something that you file in court. So clearly, the peoples’ right to legally hold the government to its deal, through the courts, is enshrined in the holy CONstitution itself. You have a RIGHT to petition the government, i.e. to sue the government for a redress if it steps out of line.
This entire system of a “right to redress” is the opposite of many other “tyrannical” systems where the rule is that the government can only be sued if it chooses to allow itself to be sued by its subjects. That type of system operates on what is called the rule of “sovereign immunity”. The governments operating in a “sovereign immunity” system are free to abuse the people without any fear of recourse.
Obviously sovereign Immunity does more than just “abridge” the right to redress grievances with a government that asserts it. It completely eliminates any “right to redress”. You only get whatever “redress” the government decides to allow. And that by definition is not a RIGHT. “Sovereign immunity” is the OPPOSITE of what we the people set up in this country under our freedom machine with our “right to petition for redress” and our “Art III” independent judiciary.
And so is your “right to petition the government for redress of grievances” the reality?
Sadly, as usual, no. The reality is far removed from the fantasy they teach the poor saps in their mandatory indoctrination centers.
In Cohens v. Virginia, in 1821, Chief Justice Marshall, without any analysis at all of the UNAMBIGUOUS language I just showed you in the 1st amend, simply “announced” that, “the universally received opinion is that no suit can be commenced or prosecuted against the United States.” So he imposed the “sovereign immunity” rule on us basically from the get go. Which is the OPPOSITE of what the constitution actually says.
