Silent Weapons Against You

  • Windows 10 November update apparently deleting some third-party programs

Microsoft may have gotten too aggressive with the speed and stability fixes in Windows 10’s November update, which is reportedly wiping some programs from users’ PCs.

As noted by VentureBeat, complaints about the update have started popping up in numerous threads on Reddit. The latest complaint, posted on Monday, claims that the update had removed CPU-Z and AMD Catalyst Control Center from the user’s system. Previous complaints have mentioned CCleaner, Intel WiDi Remote, Speccy, and Cisco VPN.

It’s worth noting that not everyone has the November update yet. Microsoft first started rolling it out on November 12, while offering a media creation tool for users who wanted the upgrade right away. But Microsoft has since removed that tool for unclear reasons, saying that all future installs should go through Windows Update instead. The update in general has been causing numerous bugs, as noted by Ars Technica .

  • Li-Fi has just been tested in the real world, and it’s 100 times faster than Wi-Fi

Expect to hear a whole lot more about Li-Fi – a wireless technology that transmits high-speed data using visible light communication (VLC) – in the coming months. With scientists achieving speeds of 224 gigabits per second in the lab using Li-Fi earlier this year, the potential for this technology to change everything about the way we use the Internet is huge.

And now, scientists have taken Li-Fi out of the lab for the first time, trialling it in offices and industrial environments in Tallinn, Estonia, reporting that they can achieve data transmission at 1 GB per second – that’s 100 times faster than current average Wi-Fi speeds.

  • S400 to Syria – Putin seals Syria’s Airspace
Russia will transfer to Syria the S-400 air defence system. This was stated by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. The anti-aircraft missile system S-400 will be transferred to the Hmeymim air base in Syria” – Shoigu said at the board meeting of the military department of the Russian Federation.
S-400 “Triumph” is an anti-aircraft missile system which is also a large and medium-range air defense missile system of a new generation. It is designed to destroy air and space attacks. This anti-aircraft missile system can simultaneously attack up to 36 objectives, launching 72 missiles in total.
  • NATO halts airstrikes as Russian S-400 Battery enforces no-fly zone in Syria

The deployment of the highly advanced Russian S-400 anti-air missiles at the Khmeimin base, Russia’s military enclave in Syria near Latakia, combined with Russia electronic jamming and other electronic warfare equipment, has effectively transformed most of Syria into a no-fly zone under Russian control.

Moscow deployed the missiles last Wednesday, Nov. 25, the day after Turkish warplanes downed a Russian Su-24. Since then, the US and Turkey have suspended their air strikes over Syria, including bombardments of Islamic State targets. The attacks on ISIS in Iraq continue without interruption. Turkey is now extra-careful to avoid flights anywhere near the Syrian border. Both the US and Turkey are obviously wary of risking their planes being shot down by the S-400, so long as Russian-Turkish tensions run high over the Su-24 incident.

Friday, a US-led coalition spokesperson denied that the absence of anti-IS coalition air strikes had anything to do with the S-400 deployment in Syria. He said “The fluctuation or absence of strikes in Syria reflects the ebb and flow of battle.”

  • Russia destroys Turkish truck convoy headed for Syrian militants — Erdogan silent
Today the Russian air force eliminated an entire column of trucks loaded with supplies intended for the militants, there since yesterday. In any other comparable situation, the Turkish government and Erdogan in person, would have complained of Russia bombing trucks laden with Humanitarian Aid, but now, they can’t afford to.
Thus Russia continues wiping out all objectives near the Turkish border, utterly ignoring the interests of Turkey (previously observed). It can now be affirmed that Turkey no longer is getting cheap oil, the militants can’t get normal supplies, and border crossings by Turkish vehicles will be stopped by strikes from the Russian Air Force.
Since yesterday, Russia has been mounting massive air and artillery strikes (with the Syrian army) in the border areas with Turkey. And it means the destruction of the supply infrastructure, which was established by Turkey in these years of the war in Syria.
P.S. We learn from the Turkish press that 20 trucks were destroyed, seven killed, and 10 were injured by the strikes and the consequent fires.
  • Time to ACT: China launches WAR on ISIS after terrorists ‘execute Chinese hostage’
ISIS claimed this week that Chinese national, Fan Jinghui, 50 had been executed alongside Norwegian national Ole Johan Grimsgaard-Ofstad.In reaction, the Chinese president has said he would “crack down” on violent terrorist operations and join the war against Islamic State.

Xi Jinping said: “China will strengthen cooperation with the international community, resolutely crack down on violent terrorist operations that devastate innocent lives and safeguard world peace and security.”

  • China To Open First Military Base In Africa, Signs Deal With Djibouti, US General Says
China has signed a 10-year deal with the African nation Djibouti to build a military base there — China’s first military base on the continent, said U.S. Army Gen. David Rodriguez, who is a commander with U.S. Africa Command. China has long had an economic foothold in Africa, but the base would be an expansion of its military prowess beyond the Asia-Pacific region.Djibouti is a small country in East Africa, across from Yemen and on the Gulf of Aden, with a population of just under 830,000. The vast majority of the population is Muslim; about 6 percent are Christian. Djibouti also hosts about 4,000 U.S. military service members at Camp Lemonnier, which, according to its website, is a Navy-led establishment that supports and prepares ships, aircraft and other deployments for “regional and combatant command requirements.” It also enables U.S. military operations in the surrounding Horn of Africa while “fostering positive U.S.-African Nation relations,” the website said.

  • Bolivia declares Israel a terrorist state, 42 years of visa free travel called off
olivia on Wednesday renounced a visa exemption agreement with Israel in protest over its offensive in Gaza, and declared it a terrorist state.President Evo Morales announced the move during a talk with a group of educators in the city of Cochabamba. It “means, in other words, we are declaring (Israel) a terrorist state,” he said.

The treaty has allowed Israelis to travel freely to Bolivia without a visa since 1972. Morales said the Gaza offensive shows “that Israel is not a guarantor of the principles of respect for life and the elementary precepts of rights that govern the peaceful and harmonious coexistence of our international community.”

More than two weeks of fighting in Gaza have left 1,300 dead and 6,000 wounded amid an intense Israeli air and ground campaign in response to missile attacks by the Palestinian resistance faction Hamas.

  • Gangs of New York: Sicilian mafia offers Big Apple protection from ‘psychopathic’ ISIS
The son of a New York mob boss has given Islamic State a stark warning, saying if they are planning any attacks in New York, they will have to contend with the Sicilian mafia. The notorious crime syndicate say they want to do their bit to protect locals.

Giovanni Gambino, the son of a key figure in the Gambino mob organization, says the mafia is in a much better position than security bodies, such as the FBI or Homeland Security, to give New Yorkers the protection they need.

“They often act too late, or fail to see a complete picture of what’s happening due to a lack of ‘human intelligence,’” he said in an interview with NBC News, as cited by Reuters, adding that the mafia’s knowledge of individual movements and interaction with locals gives it the upper hand, even compared to the latest surveillance technologies.

The Punchline:  Gambino, who is trying to carve out a career as a Hollywood screenwriter, says that, following the horrendous terror attacks in Paris on November 13, protection is more important than ever.

The Fever Hot Pitchmen

  • Paris climate activists put under house arrest using emergency laws

At least 24 climate activists have been put under house arrest by French police, accused of flouting a ban on organising protests during next week’s Paris climate summit, the Guardian has learned.

One legal adviser to the activists said many officers raided his Paris apartment and occupied three floors and a staircase in his block.

French authorities did not respond to requests for comment but lawyers said that the warrants were issued under state of emergency laws, imposed after the terror attacks that killed 130 people earlier this month.

The author and climate change campaigner, Naomi Klein, accused French authorities of “a gross abuse of power that risks turning the summit into a farce”.

“Climate summits are not photo opportunities to boost the popularity of politicians,” she told the Guardian. “Given the stakes of the climate crisis, they are by their nature highly contested. That is democracy, messy as it may be.

  • Dialogue between religions essential, says pope on first day of African visit
Pope Francis has called on Christians and Muslims to engage in a dialogue of peace in the face of religious radicalisation and “barbarous” attacks, as he began the first full day of his three-nation trip to Africa. The pope met a small group of faith leaders in Nairobi before a public open-air mass, attended by around 300,000 people in the pouring rain and amid tight security.

Religion could never be used to justify violence, the pope told Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and Jewish representatives.

  • 97 Percent Of Americans Don’t Care About Global Warming

While 97 percent of scientists may agree mankind is driving global warming, 97 percent of Americans don’t seem to care about the issue when stacked up against other concerns such as terrorism or the economy, according to a recent Fox News poll.

A November Fox News poll of more than 1,000 registered voters found that only 3 percent listed “climate change” as the most important issue facing the country today, down from 5 percent in August. Americans were much more worried about terrorism, the economy and immigration than global warming.

  • UN climate talks to start a day early

An early start – a day earlier than planned – ‘will offer an opportunity to make the best possible use of the very limited time available to finalize negotiations,’ the UN says in a statement.Negotiations for a world pact to curb global warming will start in Paris Sunday, November 29, a day ahead of schedule, the UN said Wednesday, November 25, as a report warned 2015 could become the hottest year on record.

The crunch UN summit will be officially opened by more than 150 heads of state and government on Monday, November 30, as planned, making it the biggest gathering of world leaders on climate in history.

But negotiators will already meet at the conference venue from Sunday, the UN’s climate change secretariat said.

An early start “will offer an opportunity to make the best possible use of the very limited time available to finalize negotiations,” it said in a statement.

  • Ex-World Bank chief economist exposes “failure” of austerity, deregulation

In a little-known speech at the United Nations University, renowned Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz criticised Western approaches to addressing the global economic crisis for being obsessed with market solutions that cannot work.

His remarks were made just two months before the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) issued its latest forecast of a “deeply concerning” slowdown in global trade, which the group says has dropped perilously close to levels “associated with global recession.”

All this is believed to drive growth and enhance the distribution of wealth.

In reality, as Stiglitz told an audience at the UN University’s World Institute for Development Economics Research, it has done the opposite.

Thirty years ago, he said, “the focus was on limiting the role of the government — getting it out of the way…

“Now we realize that government is essential, and a central part of development policy is improving the performance of the public sector. While the Washington Consensus policies and the theories on which they have been based have been widely discredited, their influence still lingers, often masqueraded using different language.”

  • Maurice Strong, U.N. pioneer in green diplomacy, dies at 86

Maurice Strong, whose work helped lead to the landmark climate summit that begins in Paris on Monday, has died at age 86, the head of the U.N.’s environmental agency said Saturday.

“Strong will forever be remembered for placing the environment on the international agenda and at the heart of development,” said Achim Steiner, executive director of the U.N. Environment Program (UNEP).

Right To Counsel?

  • This Supreme Court Case Soon May Remove Your Right To Hire A Lawyer

The US Supreme Court could grant prosecutors the power to stop you from using your own money to hire a defense attorney in a major case the justices are considering.

In Luis v. US, the federal government is arguing it has the power to freeze all of a defendant’s assets, including those not earned through crime.

“What the government proposes to do is financially cripple someone before they’ve been convicted, before they’ve had a trial and not allow them to use assets that are theirs to try to match the government in the courtroom,” defense attorney Howard Srebnick told the media, referencing the Nov. 10 oral arguments.

Srebnick is representing Sila Luis, who owns home health care companies and is accused of a scam to defraud Medicare. The US attorney froze all of Luis’s assets, including money not related to the alleged fraud, after it indicted her in 2012, NPR reported. Srebnick contends that deprives Luis of her Sixth Amendment right to counsel by taking away money she could use to hire a defense attorney.

Wrong To Convict

  • State Supreme Court Rules Cannabis in the Blood Does NOT Constitute Impairment

Colorado juries are increasingly acquitting people of driving under the influence of cannabis, and prosecutors are furious. The trend is important in that it represents jury nullification of an arbitrary, unscientific state law establishing a “legal limit” for blood-THC.

The case of Melanie Brinegar provided an example. As a licensed medical cannabis patient, she was charged for having a blood-THC level over Colorado’s legal limit, but convinced the jury that she was not impaired and actually drives better after using cannabis.

On Friday, the Arizona Supreme Court unanimously stated that the presence of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in the blood does not necessarily mean that a person is impaired.

The court rejected the defense’s argument that possessing a state-issued medical cannabis card gives them immunity from prosecution, but created an “affirmative defense” for those charged with cannabis DUI.

They can still be charged with violating the law for testing positive, but can escape conviction by proving to the court “that the concentration of marijuana or its impairing metabolite in their bodies is insufficient to cause impairment.”

Helping To Take A Bite Out Of Crime

  • No more fillings as dentists reveal new tooth decay treatment

Scientists have developed a new pain-free filling that allows cavities to be repaired without drilling or injections.

The tooth-rebuilding technique developed at King’s College London does away with fillings and instead encourages teeth to repair themselves.

Tooth decay is normally removed by drilling, after which the cavity is filled with a material such as amalgam or composite resin.

The new treatment, called Electrically Accelerated and Enhanced Remineralisation (EAER), accelerates the natural movement of calcium and phosphate minerals into the damaged tooth.

A two-step process first prepares the damaged area of enamel, then uses a tiny electric current to push minerals into the repair site. It could be available within three years.

If You Can Afford It

  • The rise of DIY dentistry: Britons doing their own fillings to avoid NHS bill

A missed appointment and resulting £25 charge led Alex to become a DIY dentist. Using an emergency over-the-counter dental first aid kit, bought from a pound store, the 38-year-old building engineer from Glasgow began fixing his own teeth rather than run up bills. “I couldn’t justify going and getting my teeth out when we can’t afford nappies,” he said.

His partner, Tilly, gave up her teaching job when their eldest son was diagnosed with leukaemia five years ago. When the recession hit, Alex found work hard to come by. A jobcentre interview clashed with an appointment to fill some cavities, and Alex concluded that the family could not afford his dental work.

In a country that prides itself on free healthcare, DIY dentistry is an almost Victorian notion of hardship. But poverty and inequality – and the increasing stigma attached to both – are blocking access to healthcare for the poorest people in the UK, and grim tales of a black economy are on the rise.

Senate Votes to Allow Veterans to Use State Medical Marijuana Programs, On Veterans Day Eve

The U.S. Senate has passed a measure that will allow veterans living in legal medical marijuana states to take advantage of those programs without negative consequences from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Passed on the eve of Veterans Day, the legislation would allow Veterans Health Administration doctors to discuss medical marijuana use with patients for the first time.

    CONGRESS.GOV
The bill includes a provision prohibiting the VA from interfering with or denying services to veterans participating in state-approved medicinal marijuana programs.
    —————-
(Sec. 246) Prohibits funds provided by this bill from being used to: interfere with the ability of veterans to participate in a state-approved medicinal marijuana program, deny services to veterans participating in a program, or interfere with the ability of a VA health care provider care to comply with a program.

Current federal regulations prohibit doctors who work for the V.A. from recommending cannabis as part of treatment, regardless of whether the patient lives in on of the 23 states that have laws allowing for medicinal use.
