By Deception or Incompetence

  • Oregon militants: Walden takes BLM to woodshed
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management was the target of withering criticism Tuesday by Oregon  Rep. Greg Walden in a dramatic speech.Walden, speaking from the House floor for nearly a half hour, gave voice to rural frustrations with government officials, particularly the federal land bureau that manages huge swaths of eastern Oregon. Here is the text of his speech, provided by his office:

Mr. Speaker, I am sure my colleagues are aware of the situation in Harney County, Oregon, where a group of armed protesters have overtaken a Federal facility in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

This group is led largely by people who are not necessarily from Oregon, although they obviously have supporters from Oregon. They were originally there to protest the sentencing of Dwight and Steve Hammond.

I know the Hammonds. I have known them for probably close to 20 years. They are longtime, responsible ranchers in Harney County. They have been sentenced to prison not once, but now twice. I will get into that in a moment.

  • Militia Leader Ammon Bundy Met With a Local Sheriff to Discuss Ending the Oregon Standoff
The leader of the anti-government militia that has occupied a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon and the local sheriff met on Thursday in an effort to resolve the situation peacefully. The meeting ended without an agreement, but the two will talk again Friday in another attempt to find a solution.”I am here to escort you safely out of town,” Harney County Sheriff David Ward told militia leader Ammon Bundy at a rendezvous on a desolate road 20 minutes away from the refuge. A group of militia members led by Bundy arrived in a convoy at the rendezvous, witnessed by VICE News, while the sheriff came accompanied by a small tactical team.

The two met by the side of the road for about five minutes, then shook hands, and agreed to talk again on Friday.

“At some point this all has to be resolved,” said the sheriff. “Let’s get the community back to normal before everything gets out of hand.”

  • Destruction of the West: Who’s to blame?
“With more than 50 percent of the West in federal holdings (only four percent in the East), Congress and agencies in gridlock, and judges and environmental [special-interest] groups taking over federal-land management, hope of preventing future massive fires is bleak, without serious radical change. Currently, there is little incentive to return to commonsense management of our God-given natural resources with which the American West has been blessed. Those who live on and with the land have understood and practiced stewardship for generations.”“We have some 73 million acres of national forest lands at risk from wildland fires that could compromise human safety and ecosystem integrity…. The situation is simply not sustainable—not socially, not economically, not ecologically.”

    — Chief Dale Bosworth, U.S. Forest Service, 2003

Dale Bosworth, former chief of the USFS, may have recognized the problem in 2003, now, 12 years later, this situation has become even more ominous, according to a comprehensive special report in RANGE magazine. In explicit detail, the overview reveals the bureaucratic failures that are killing people and destroying homes, livelihoods, lands and wildlife, and the efforts by special-interest groups to block solutions—and in the process make money at taxpayers’ expense.

  • Dept. of Homeland Security giving states two years to meet REAL ID Act

The Department of Homeland Security is giving states an extra two years to comply with federal requirements to issue driving licenses with extra safety features.

Residents of states not compliant with the REAL ID Act of 2005 will have until January 2018 to use a passport or other official identification to board a domestic flight.

Nuclear Neighbors

  • Portions of Land at San Onofre Nuclear Plant “May Be Contaminated”: Navy
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the meetings have been going on for almost two years and involve all the players with a stake in the prime coastal property.
SDGE and SCE lease the land the nuclear plant occupies from the Navy. The utility companies are attempting to end that lease early. In a letter sent to NBC 7 Investigates on Oct. 2, Maureen Brown, a spokesperson for SCE, said: “There is no current radiological contamination” and “readings (at the SONGS property) are normal background radiation levels.”
New documents obtained through the federal Freedom of Information Act appear to challenge what SCE said about the current condition of the property.

Suspicious Knowledge

  • Brown rejects Kitzhaber’s bid for state help with legal costs

Gov. Kate Brown has rejected requests from former Gov. John Kitzhaber for state help in covering his mounting legal bills in the ongoing influence peddling investigation.

The governor turned down Kitzhaber “because state policy required written representations by the Governor’s Office that Kitzhaber had acted in good faith and within the scope of his job duties, and there wasn’t sufficient information to do that,” said Kristen Grainger, Brown’s spokeswoman.

Opening Pandora’s Box

  • Texas Governor Calls For Constitutional Convention To “Wrest Power” From Obama

When it comes to Texas’ relationship with the Federal government, the word “rocky” comes to mind. And nobody embodies said rockiness better than Texas governor Greg Abbott, who recently made headlines after announcing that irrelevant of D.C.’s demands, Texas would refuse to accept any Syrian refugees.

This followed his announcement earlier this summer 2015 when fears over nebulous Federal intentions with operation “Jade Helm” were running high, that “to address concerns that Texas citizens and to ensure that Texas communities remain safe, secure, and informed about military procedures occurring in their vicinity, I am directing the state guard to monitor Operation Jade Helm 15.”

Prior to this, Abbott was again in the news back in June when he signed a bill into law that would allow Texas to build a gold and silver bullion depository, which would allow Texas to repatriate $1 billion worth of bullion from the New York Fed to the new facility once completed.

In short: the Federal government and the state of Texas have been on collision course of many months, one which culminated on Friday when Abbott called for a Constitutional Convention of states, spearheaded by Texas, and which would amend the U.S. Constitution to wrest power from a federal government “run amok.”

To achieve that, Abbott proposed nine amendments to “restore the Rule of Law and return the Constitution to its intended purpose.”

Infringing Arms

  • High court: No constitutional right to carry a knife in Seattle

Upholding a city of Seattle ban, the Washington state Supreme Court has ruled that there is no constitutional right to carry a knife.

Writing for the majority, Justice Charles Wiggins said neither the state constitution nor the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution block the city law against carrying knives. The 5-4 split decision enables local restrictions against knives that likely could not be extended to firearms.

“While almost any common object may be used as a weapon, that does not necessarily mean that possession of otherwise innocuous objects that could be wielded with malice will trigger the constitutional protections afforded to ‘arms,’” Wiggins said in the majority opinion.

Wayne Anthony Evans was carrying a sheathed kitchen knife when a Seattle police officer pulled him over in February 2010 while driving in the city’s Central District. Evans, who had been stopped for speeding, told the officer he had a knife in his pocket when asked.

Green Scheme Death

  • Aussie Green Power Scheme Collapse

“The Australian” newspaper reports that a rise in costs, climate “fatigue”, and a rise in green tokenism has caused a collapse in demand for an Aussie green energy scheme.

Climate change fatigue, cost hits renewable GreenPower scheme

GreenPower, a scheme run by state governments in which people and businesses pay more for their power to buy non-fossil-fuel electricity, has been hit by up to a 40 per cent increase in cost as retailers pass on the rising price of large-scale renewable energy certificates.

Even before the price jump, the willingness of customers to pay more for renewable energy has ebbed in line with the political debate over climate change policies.

The scheme has gone from more than 900,000 customers in 2008 who bought about 1 per cent of total generation to just over 500,000 who bought just 0.6 per cent of all the electricity generated in 2013.

Since, sales have dropped a further 21 per cent.

A report by UTS’s Institute of Sustainable Futures for the NSW Department of Resources and Energy — which administers the scheme on behalf of all the states — said the rise in roof- top solar panels had contributed to the demise of GreenPower. “It seems that once customers have ‘done their bit’ by paying for solar PV, they no longer see the need to pay extra for GreenPower.”

So why is the price of green power rising?

Lottery Fix

  • No Powerball Jackpot Winner, Pot to Grow to $1.3 Billion

    Better luck on Wednesday.

There were no jackpot winners in any state in Saturday’s biggest-ever $900 million Powerball drawing, and the jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing will grow to an estimated $1.3 billion, the Texas Lottery Commission said.

  • Jackpot-fixing investigation expands to more state lotteries

The allegations read like a movie plot: a lottery industry insider installs an undetectable software program in the computers that pick winning numbers so he can know them in advance. He enlists accomplices to play those numbers and collect the jackpots. And they enrich themselves for years until a misstep unravels their high-tech scheme.

Eddie Tipton, former security director of the Multi-State Lottery Association, has been accused of tampering with drawings in four states over a six-year period, and investigators are now expanding the inquiry nationwide to determine if the number could be larger.

State lotteries in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma have confirmed they paid jackpots worth $8 million to Tipton associates, including his old college roommate, Robert Rhodes. Investigators are looking at payouts in the other 37 states and U.S. territories that used random-number generators from the Iowa-based association, which administers games and distributes prizes for the lottery consortium.

The inquiry is sending a chill through state governments that receive $20 billion annually in lottery revenue, and that depend on public confidence in the contests. Tipton installed software or had access to machines for national games such as Hot Lotto and some state-based games. The most lucrative ones, Powerball and scratch tickets, weren’t part of the scheme, according to lottery officials.

“It would be pretty naive to believe they are the only four” jackpots involved, said now-retired Iowa deputy attorney general Thomas H. Miller, who oversaw the investigation for 2 ½bd} years. “If you find one cockroach, you have to assume there are 100 more you haven’t found.”

Tipton, 52, was convicted in July of fraud in the attempt to claim a $16.5 million jackpot in Iowa.

UNjokingly

  • UN human rights envoy to Palestinian Territories resigns over Israeli ‘denial of access’
The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine resigned Monday, citing frustration at Israel’s denial of access to Palestinian territories.

Indonesian diplomat Makarim Wibisono said during his resignation that, “unfortunately, my efforts to help improve the lives of Palestinian victims of violations under the Israeli occupation have been frustrated every step of the way.
