  • It’s time to retire the tainted term ‘fake news’

    Fake news is a real thing — as evidenced by these wholly invented stories created in Macedonia with the intent of fooling U.S. audiences. But the phrase is now being used as a catch-all insult and has lost its meaning. ​ (Raphael Satter/AP)

    When Jim DeMint wanted to dis a TV interviewer’s suggestion that Obamacare has merits as well as flaws, the former senator and tea partyer used a handy putdown: “You can put all that under the category of fake news.”

    Fake news has a real meaning — deliberately constructed lies, in the form of news articles, meant to mislead the public. For example: The one falsely claiming that Pope Francis had endorsed Donald Trump, or the one alleging without basis that Hillary Clinton would be indicted just before the election.

    But though the term hasn’t been around long, its meaning already is lost. Faster than you could say “Pizzagate,” the label has been co-opted to mean any number of completely different things: Liberal claptrap. Or opinion from left-of-center. Or simply anything in the realm of news that the observer doesn’t like to hear.

     

  • Reporters tell me the truth off the record: the fake news business

    During my 34 years of working as a reporter, I’ve had many informal conversations with mainstream journalists. They were illuminating.

    Here, from my notes (1982-2011), taken after the conversations, are what these guardians on the watchtower revealed:

    ONE: “Investigative reporting has been dying. There’s no money for it. If I work on a piece for three months, while my paper is paying me, suppose at the end I come up dry? It happens. I can’t make my case. I’ve got nothing to show for it, and my paper is out whatever they’ve been paying me. They don’t like that. The other thing is, investigative work makes my bosses nervous. They don’t know where it’ll lead. Worst case, I might come up with something that’ll put the paper in a bad light. It’s like an intelligence agent in the field who wanders off the reservation. He’s got an assignment, but he sees something better, more important, and that’s where he goes. He ends up finding out something about his own agency. Something bad. I’ve seen that happen. A reporter finds out his own paper has been covering up a heavy scandal. It’s an intrinsic part of the story. What’s he going to do now? Go to his editor and tell him what’s going on? Chances are, his editor already knows. Now the reporter’s jammed up. He’s in a bad spot. A guy I know came to me with that exact problem. You know what I told him? Burn your notes. That’s what I said.”

    TWO: “Most reporters who cover major issues are de facto intelligence assets. Some know it, most don’t. They’re all taking their information from controlled sources. It’s like somebody giving you talking points as if they’re the honest truth. In these talking points, you’re told who the players are in a story and what they’re doing. But they aren’t the important players, and what they’re doing is just a cover for what’s really going on. It’s all about misdirection. I’ve managed to get a few stories published about illusion vs. reality. But the thing is, no one follows up on that. It’s in print, and then it dies. One night, I had a little heart to heart with my editor. I told him it would be a lot easier if I just had a desk at the CIA in Langley. He agreed. He said we could move the whole paper there. But then the spooks would realize they didn’t need us at all. They could put out the paper themselves.”

    THREE: “We’re in a business. We’re selling a product. That’s our role. If our bosses don’t like what we’re submitting to them, they let us know we’re giving them the wrong product. Our company makes product A and we’re giving them product B. Most reporters wouldn’t even understand what I’m saying, because they’re mentally in the camp of product A. That’s where they live. So as far as they’re concerned, they have lots of leeway. I don’t like talking to those guys. They’re dumb.”

    The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will have the world’s eyes on them tomorrow morning as a crucial decision about the movement of the minute hand is made.The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic timepiece that represents the countdown to a catastrophic event occurring, such as nuclear war or life-ending climate change.

    The last time it was moved – bringing into three minutes to midnight – was in January 2015 due to unmanaged “climate change, global nuclear weapons modernisations and outsized nuclear weapons arsenals”.

     

  • Environmentalists’ Wild Predictions

    Now that another Earth Day has come and gone, let’s look at some environmentalist predictions that they would prefer we forget.

    At the first Earth Day celebration, in 1969, environmentalist Nigel Calder warned, “The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind.” C.C. Wallen of the World Meteorological Organization said, “The cooling since 1940 has been large enough and consistent enough that it will not soon be reversed.” In 1968, Professor Paul Ehrlich, Vice President Gore’s hero and mentor, predicted there would be a major food shortage in the U.S. and “in the 1970s … hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death.” Ehrlich forecasted that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980 and 1989, and by 1999 the U.S. population would have declined to 22.6 million. Ehrlich’s predictions about England were gloomier: “If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.”

    In 1972, a report was written for the Club of Rome warning the world would run out of gold by 1981, mercury and silver by 1985, tin by 1987 and petroleum, copper, lead and natural gas by 1992. Gordon Taylor, in his 1970 book “The Doomsday Book,” said Americans were using 50 percent of the world’s resources and “by 2000 they [Americans] will, if permitted, be using all of them.” In 1975, the Environmental Fund took out full-page ads warning, “The World as we know it will likely be ruined by the year 2000.”

    Here are a few facts: Over 95 percent of the greenhouse effect is the result of water vapor in Earth’s atmosphere. Without the greenhouse effect, Earth’s average temperature would be zero degrees Fahrenheit. Most climate change is a result of the orbital eccentricities of Earth and variations in the sun’s output. On top of that, natural wetlands produce more greenhouse gas contributions annually than all human sources combined.

  • Miami-Dade mayor orders jails to comply with Trump crackdown on ‘sanctuary’ counties

    Fearing a loss of millions of dollars for defying immigration authorities, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday ordered county jails to comply with federal immigration detention requests — effectively gutting the county’s position as a “sanctuary” for immigrants in the country illegally.

    Gimenez cited an executive order signed Wednesday by President Donald Trump that threatened to cut federal grants for any counties or cities that don’t cooperate fully with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Since 2013, Miami-Dade has refused to indefinitely detain inmates who are in the country illegally and wanted by ICE — not based on principle, but because the federal government doesn’t fully reimburse the county for the expense.

    It’s time to say goodbye to Yahoo!

    While Yahoo’s core internet business was being sold to Verizon for $4.8 Billion, the remaining portions of the company left behind is renaming itself to Altaba Inc, which marks the sad ending of one of the most familiar brand names on the internet.

    In a public filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday, the company announced that after the planned sale of its core business to telecom giant Verizon, the leftover would change its brand name to Altaba.

     

  • New Trojan Turns Thousands Of Linux Devices Into Proxy Servers

    “Linux doesn’t get viruses” — It’s a Myth.

    A new Trojan has been discovered in the wild that turns Linux-based devices into proxy servers, which attackers use to protect their identity while launching cyber attacks from the hijacked systems.

    Dubbed Linux.Proxy.10, the Trojan was first spotted at the end of last year by the researchers from Russian security firm Doctor Web, who later identified thousand of compromised machines by the end of January this year and the campaign is still ongoing and hunting for more Linux machines.


  • Charger Mobile Ransomware Removed from Google Play

    Security researchers have identified a new and evasive mobile ransomware strain called Charger on the Google Play app store. The Charger malware was bundled with an SMS-snooping app called EnergyRescue that pawned itself off as a battery management utility, according to Check Point security researchers.

    Check Point says it found the malicious app three weeks ago and that since then, Google has removed the offending software from Google Play. The app, researchers said, represents a bold win for cybercriminals peddling ransomware via Google Play. By a large majority, most Android malware is distributed via third-party apps stores.

    “Charger could be an indicator of a wider effort by mobile malware developers to catch up with their PC ransomware cousins,” wrote Oren Koriat and Andrey Polkovnichenko, both Check Point security analysts.

    “EnergyRescue has the largest arsenal of evasion methods we’ve seen to date,” Check Point researchers told Threatpost. According to Koriat and Polkovnichenko, most malware that does manage to make it onto Google Play is malicious adware where cybercriminals profit via ads and app referrals. However, with Charger, the target is the user.

    The infection path began after downloading the EnergyRescue app which steals the target’s contacts and SMS messages. Next, the app attempts to trick phone owners into granting EnergyRescue admin permissions. “If granted, the ransomware locks the device and displays a message demanding payment,” according to their research report “Charger Malware Calls and Raises the Risk on Google Play.”

  • Nasty Android Malware that Infected Millions Returns to Google Play Store

    HummingBad – an Android-based malware that infected over 10 million Android devices around the world last year and made its gang an estimated US$300,000 per month at its peak – has made a comeback.

    Security researchers have discovered a new variant of the HummingBad malware hiding in more than 20 Android apps on Google Play Store.

    The infected apps were already downloaded by over 12 Million unsuspecting users before the Google Security team removed them from the Play Store.

    Dubbed HummingWhale by researchers at security firm Check Point, the new malware utilizes new, cutting-edge techniques that allow the nasty software to conduct Ad fraud better than ever before and generate revenue for its developers.

    The Check Point researchers said the HummingWhale-infected apps had been published under the name of fake Chinese developers on the Play Store with common name structure, com.[name].camera, but with suspicious startup behaviors.

     

  • Hotel ransomed by hackers as guests locked in rooms

    One of Europe’s top hotels has admitted they had to pay thousands in Bitcoin ransom to cybercriminals who managed to hack their electronic key system, locking hundreds of guests in or out of their rooms until the money was paid.

    Furious hotel managers at the Romantik Seehotel Jaegerwirt, a luxurious 4-star hotel with a beautiful lakeside setting on the Alpine Turracher Hoehe Pass in Austria, said they decided to go public with what happened to warn others of the dangers of cybercrime.

    And they said they wanted to see more done to tackle cybercriminals as this sort of activity is set to get worse. The hotel has a modern IT system which includes key cards for hotel doors, like many other hotels in the industry.

    Hotel management said that they have now been hit three times by cybercriminals who this time managed to take down the entire key system. The guests could no longer get in or out of the hotel rooms and new key cards could not be programmed.

     

  • Google has an Android security problem

    In almost every security disclosure list, you’ll usually find one company digging up the dirt on the most recent vulnerabilities: Google. The team, dubbed Project Zero, rips apart software to find and report flaws to the owner. The aim? To make the world a safer place.

    And it doesn’t always go well. This year alone, Google disclosed two security flaws in Microsoft’s software, leaving the software giant fuming. The security team gave Microsoft three months to fix the flaw, or face public shaming. Apple’s also been taken to task, with at least three zero-day flaws published ahead of its patching. (The benefit is that companies wake up and fix the flaw sooner rather than later. The obvious risk is that if it’s not fixed, it’s the user’s problem.)

    But while Google throws stones at its competitors, it’s neglecting its own glass house full of users to protect.

    Android remains the most popular mobile operating system in the world with over 81 percent of the worldwide market share. But only a fraction of Android’s share is running the software’s latest version, with the latest bug fixes, vulnerability patches, and security updates. Official stats say just shy of 10 percent are using Android 5.0 “Lollipop,” with about 39 percent running the second latest version, Android 4.4 “KitKat.”

    That’s a huge gap, but not close to even older versions. It’s almost exactly split fifty-fifty down the middle between Android 4.3 and earlier — including some 930 million devices that remain vulnerable to a security flaw Google won’t fix, and Android 4.4 and later.

    With about two weeks until the next version is announced — Android “M” — the fragmentation problem is expected to get worse. And that means security will get worse.

    In regards to GMOs, the FDA’s declaration of “substantial equivalence” means that there is no long-term, independent safety testing of new foods and crops that have been genetically engineered.
    When it comes to the forthcoming GMO pineapple, that is once again the case: the FDA has said that Del Monte’s proposed creation is “safe” based solely on information submitted by the company itself. There is a distinct lack of information on long-term potential health effects, however.

  • Hybrid zoo: Introducing pig–human embryos and a rat–mouse

    Scientists have published the first peer-reviewed account of creating pig–human hybrid fetuses, a step toward growing animals with organs that are suitable for transplantation into humans.

    The team that made these chimaeras also reports the creation of mouse–rat and human–cow hybrids on 26 January in Cell1. Such modified animals could provide researchers with new models for testing drugs and understanding early human development.

    To create chimaeras, scientists generally inject pluripotent stem cells — which can become any type of organ — from one species into the early embryo of a second species. In theory, the foreign cells should differentiate and spread throughout the body, but in practice, producing viable hybrid embryos has proven difficult.

    To get around this, a team led by developmental biologist Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, used CRISPR gene-editing technology to create mouse embryos without the genes that cause organs to form. The scientists then injected rat stem cells into the mouse embryos and implanted the embryos into a mouse’s uterus.

  • Cambridge scientists consider fake news ‘vaccine’

    The appearance of fake news on websites and social media has inspired scientists to develop a “vaccine” to immunise people against the problem.

    A University of Cambridge study devised psychological tools to target fact distortion.

    Researchers suggest “pre-emptively exposing” readers to a small “dose” of the misinformation can help organisations cancel out bogus claims.

    Stories on the US election and Syria are among those to have caused concern.

    “Misinformation can be sticky, spreading and replicating like a virus,” said the University of Cambridge study’s lead author Dr Sander van der Linden.

    “The idea is to provide a cognitive repertoire that helps build up resistance to misinformation, so the next time people come across it they are less susceptible.”

    The study, published in the journal Global Challenges, was conducted as a disguised experiment.

    More than 2,000 US residents were presented with two claims about global warming.

    The researchers say when presented consecutively, the influence well-established facts had on people were cancelled out by bogus claims made by campaigners.

    But when information was combined with misinformation, in the form of a warning, the fake news had less resonance.

  • ‘Psychological Vaccine’ May Protect Against Fake News, Alternative Facts

    In a well-timed paper from three universities in England and the U.S., researchers lay out a strategy for “inoculating” the public against the fake news and alternative facts that have been rampant in recent history. They dub the method “psychological vaccination,” since it’s conceptually similar to medical vaccinations: You insert a little bit of the material you want to inoculate against (normally, a piece of virus; here, a word of warning about fake facts), and the person becomes more resilient when confronted with it in the future. The idea is that those who are in the business of relaying actual facts may want to implement the strategy to prevent against the spread of “alternative facts.”

    To test the theory, the researchers first presented participants with accurate or inaccurate facts about a subject known to be susceptible to misinformation: Climate change. Some participants were presented with a pie chart illustrating a scientifically sound fact: “97% of scientists agree on man-made climate change.” Another group was presented with a website, the Oregon Global Warming Petition Project, which displays a (fake) petition attesting that “human-caused global warming hypothesis is without scientific validity,” and which more than 31,000 American scientists appear to have signed.

    As expected, people who saw the accurate information were later more likely to believe that there was scientific consensus on the issue of human-related climate change—20% more. But those who saw the Oregon Global Warming website were 9% less likely to believe there was scientific consensus on the subject.

  • Inoculating the Public against Misinformation about Climate Change

    Abstract

    Effectively addressing climate change requires significant changes in individual and collective human behavior and decision-making. Yet, in light of the increasing politicization of (climate) science, and the attempts of vested-interest groups to undermine the scientific consensus on climate change through organized “disinformation campaigns,” identifying ways to effectively engage with the public about the issue across the political spectrum has proven difficult. A growing body of research suggests that one promising way to counteract the politicization of science is to convey the high level of normative agreement (“consensus”) among experts about the reality of human-caused climate change. Yet, much prior research examining public opinion dynamics in the context of climate change has done so under conditions with limited external validity. Moreover, no research to date has examined how to protect the public from the spread of influential misinformation about climate change. The current research bridges this divide by exploring how people evaluate and process consensus cues in a polarized information environment. Furthermore, evidence is provided that it is possible to pre-emptively protect (“inoculate”) public attitudes about climate change against real-world misinformation.

    Kennedy understands the inherent conflict of interest at the CDC, which operates as a vaccine sales and marketing company, while at the same time posing as a neutral scientific body that assesses vaccine safety—AND OF COURSE, THE CDC PRESENTS AN EVER-EXPANDING SCHEDULE OF “NECESSARY” VACCINES TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

    Think of it: the CDC has the power—backed by federal and state governments, and supported by the fake-news media—to buy and sell vaccines, while deciding how many vaccines the population should submit to. What salesman wouldn’t want to work for an outfit like that?

  • Doctors save Canadian woman’s life by removing her lungs for six days

    In what is believed to be the first procedure of its kind in the world, doctors in Canada have saved a young mother’s life by resorting to a radical solution – they removed her lungs for six days while she waited for a transplant.

    In April, Melissa Benoit arrived at a Toronto hospital with a severe lung infection. Doctors soon realised that Benoit, who had been born with cystic fibrosis, had just hours to live, leading them to consider the unprecedented approach.

    “It was a difficult discussion because when we’re talking about something that had never to our knowledge been done before, there were a lot of unknowns,” Dr Niall Ferguson of the University Health Network, the health authority responsible for the Toronto general hospital, told a news conference on Wednesday.

    A recent bout with influenza had left the then 32-year-old fighting off respiratory failure, forcing doctors to keep her sedated and on a ventilator to help her breathe. “She got into a spiral from which her lungs were not going to recover,” said Ferguson. “Her only hope of recovery was a lung transplant.”

    Benoit was put on a temporary life support device but her condition continued to deteriorate; the bacteria in her lungs became resistant to most antibiotics, sending her body into septic shock and her blood pressure dropping. One by one, her organs began shutting down.

    Her team of doctors gathered together to weigh a bold solution they had contemplated for years but never carried out – the removal of both her lungs in hopes of eliminating the source of the bacterial infection.

  • Eye Disease Resulting From Increased Use of Fluorescent Lighting as a Climate Change Mitigation Strategy

    Abstract

    Increased use of fluorescent lighting as a climate change mitigation strategy may increase eye disease. The safe range of light to avoid exposing the eye to potentially damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation is 2000 to 3500K and greater than 500 nanometers. Some fluorescent lights fall outside this safe range.

    Fluorescent lighting may increase UV-related eye diseases by up to 12% and, according to our calculations, may cause an additional 3000 cases of cataracts and 7500 cases of pterygia annually in Australia.

    Greater control of UV exposure from fluorescent lights is required. This may be of particular concern for aging populations in developed countries and countries in northern latitudes where there is a greater dependence on artificial lighting.

Non-Criminalize Then

  • Light Up! Israel Moves Closer Toward Decriminalizing Marijuana

    Small-time cannabis users in Israel holding fewer than 15 grams of the plant could see the legal ramifications of their possession significantly reduced in coming months.

    “Shifting to decriminalization with responsibility” is the title of a new plan offered by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan. The plan would ease penalties on cannabis users, but must still get approval from the Israeli cabinet.

    The “four felonies plan” dictates that first-time felons would be fined but have no criminal record, second-time felons would be fined at twice the rate and enjoy no criminal record. A third felony would be nullified with a special settlement from a policy instituted years ago “which has started to be implemented in recent months,” Erdan noted. For third-time offenders, “the police have more options” to scrap the case and remove the offense from the criminal record. Fourth-time offenders would be criminalized, but at the discretion of law enforcement officials.

    For youth, criminalization procedures begin with the third offense. They would get sent to treatment facilities after a first offense, according to Erdan’s plan. Lawmaker Ilan Gilon commented that the plan is “far from being perfect,” but that it represents an “awareness change toward cannabis users” that is “positive and essential.”

    Entrenched attitudes and policies toward the recreational use of cannabis have “benefited mostly the industrial stakeholders,” Gilon said. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that 9 percent of Israelis use cannabis.

  • Washington Bill Would Make It Illegal to Pay for Weed With Bitcoin

    Cannabis may be among the country’s fastest growing industries, but its status as a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law poses an inconvenient discrepancy with more liberal state policies.

    It’s well known that pot businesses have used digital currency, like bitcoin, to work around the issue of banking and use of credit cards, given that most financial institutions, complying with federal law, will not service green industry folk. But now, in Washington state, even that’s under fire.

    State Senators Steve Conway and Ann Rivers proposed a bill to prohibit local cannabis businesses from buying or selling products using bitcoin. “A marijuana producer, marijuana processor, or retail outlet must not pay with or accept virtual currency for the purchase or sale of marijuana or any marijuana product,” according to the bill, in which “virtual currency” also includes digital currency.

    If this bill passes in the Washington State Senate, many businesses may be forced to return to all-cash transactions, making them vulnerable to robbery and poor accounting.

  • Commonwealth Bank of Australia issues government bond on blockchain

    Commonwealth Bank of Australia has issued a cryptobond for Queensland Treasury Corporation in the first trial run of the bank’s private, permissioned blockchain platform for the end-to-end issuance of bonds.

    The bank says Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) successfully used the blockchain to generate a bond tender, view investor bids in real time, finalise investment allocation and settle instantly with investors. QTC acted in both the issuer and investor role to test the end-to-end process for the issuance.

    The QTC bond was created in digital form using smart contract technology, and has the ability to automatically pay coupons to the current holder when due.

    Commonwealth Bank’s dedicated blockchain team developed the prototype in the bank’s Innovation Lab, in conjunction with the Institutional Banking & Markets’ debt markets team and its clients.

 

  • Europe Proposes “Restrictions On Payments In Cash”

    Having discontinued its production of EUR500 banknotes, it appears Europe is charging towards the utopian dream of a cashless society. Just days after Davos’ elites discussed why the world needs to “get rid of currency,” the European Commission has introduced a proposal enforcing “restrictions on payments in cash.”

    With Rogoff, Stiglitz, Summers et al. all calling for the end of cash – because only terrorists and drug-dealers need cash (nothing at all to do with totalitarian control over a nation’s wealth) – we are not surprised that this proposal from the European Commission (sanctuary of statism) would appear…

     The Commission published on 2 February 2016 a Communication to the Council and the Parliament on an Action Plan to further step up the fight against the financing of terrorism (COM (2016) 50). The Action Plan builds on existing EU rules to adapt to new threats and aims at updating EU policies in line with international standards. In the context of the Commission’s action to extent the scope of the Regulation on the controls of cash entering or leaving the Community, reference is made to the appropriateness to explore the relevance of potential upper limits to cash payments.

    The Action Plan states that “Payments in cash are widely used in the financing of terrorist activities… In this context, the relevance of potential upper limits to cash payments could also be explored. Several Member States have in place prohibitions for cash payments above a specific threshold.”

    As many tropical islands have become associated with dark tax-evasion and money-laundering schemes, a new shady corporate tax haven has emerged, this time located in the far, cold north.

     

    Mossack Fonseca Employee Detained in Geneva on Suspicion of Removing Data

    After digging through the Panama Papers — a massive leak of documents from law firm Mossack Fonseca — a joint investigation by the Toronto Star and CBC/Radio Canada has revealed that Canada’s tax legislation provides favorable conditions for evading taxes, creating anonymous business entities, and cleaning illegally-gained cash.

    According to the investigation, one of Canada’s key features is its near-perfect business reputation, as any company registered in Canada is naturally assumed to be law-abiding.

    Another key feature is national tax legislation that allows companies to keep the real names of owners secret, instead hiring a phony director who simply provides a face.

    Also, several Canadian provinces allow the registering of a certain type of company, called a limited partnership, that does not have to pay taxes if the company’s owners do not live in the country.

    Canada has tax agreements with 115 foreign countries, more than any other country in the world, making moving money in and out of the country a simple matter.
